i got the mk 2 2488 or whatever it's called and the phantom power powers four of the eight inputs. what i'm wondering is if there's a way to maybe alter that so it only powers lets say just two imputs? And if not would plugging in a sm 57, lets say, into an input providing phantom power cause any harm to the mic?

Thanks in advanced to help someone may provide..

Phantom power won't harm a dynamic microphone. I don't think much of anything can harm a SM 57. Built like a hammer. Be careful with ribbon mics though.

Nope, phantom power can only be on or off for inputs A - D.

A dynamic shouldn't be hurt by phantom power but as always beware.

I find the safest procedure to use with mine is to make sure that phantom power if off whilst connecting the mikes, condenser or dynamic, and make sure the master fader is all the way down, then engage the phantom power.

When disconnecting the mikes I go in reverse, master fader down, phantom power off, wait thirty seconds for the capacitors to discharge then unplug the mikes. I never use ribbons when the phantom power is on unless they are active ones that need phantom. This works for me.

I've fried mixer channels in the past by inadvertantly disconnecting condensers when the phantom power was still engaged. I've been pretty careful since figuring that one out.

With all the nice affordable front end pres out there...why even mess with the onboard pre's?
