I just bought a 488 (not the mkII), and I have been told this does not come with phantom power, can anyone suggest a good inexspensive phantom power supply box? Thanks.

Just get a cheap preamp like the Studio Projects VTB-1 for around $130. That'll let you bypass the pres in your tascam and give you phantom power.

I was actually looking for something between $50 and $100, I spent all my money on the 488 and an SP B1, do you really need to spend a lot on a phantom power supply box I mean phantom power is phantom power right? How about the Rolls PB223 Is this any good?

dude, just go to Sam Ash and ask for their cheapest phantom supply box...there's not a lot to it.

probably looking at $35

No, you don't have to spend a lot of money on a phantom power box, but I figured that a decent preamp is so cheap these days it couldn't hurt to just skip the separate phantom power box entirely.

I thought the 488 has a mic preamp in it, or is it a pretty weak preamp in which case yeah I should just get a mic preamp with phantom power. Can you suggest anything else maybe a little cheaper (I'm broke), how about the Behringer MIC100, or Art Tube MP Studio V3, are these any good? Thanks for all the help.

Rolls phantom power supply

If I remember right its like $40 at GC or MF.

I had one a couple of years ago and it was very noisy. Which is why I no longer have it.

You hit the nail on the head. The preamp in the 488 is not all that hot, and at the prices you can get a decent pre these days, I wouldn't waste my money on a separate phantom power supply.

The least I would spend on a pre is $90 for the m-audio audiobuddy, but if you can afford another $50 bucks or so you can get an m-audio dmp ($140) or a studio projects vtb1 ($130), which would be a lot better than the audio buddy. The ART, behringer, and presonus stuff sucks; don't even look at it.

I would agree with noiseportrait. Nady gives you 8 channels, though I have not heard them , I am suspect at $12.50 per channel. The ones NP mentioned, I have heard and they are okay

Here are a few alternatives, recommended in order:

1. Dmp3. http://www.8thstreet.com/product.asp?ProductCode=10268&Category=Audio_Processors A little over your stated budget but well worth it if you can squeeze out the cash. It is a better long term investment than the others mentioned. I own one of these and highly recommend it. Reviews found here:http://www.mojopie.com/dmp3.html

2. Audio Buddy. http://www.8thstreet.com/product.asp?ProductCode=10658&Category=Audio_Processors Goofy name, but a solid piece of gear. Within your stated budget. Gives you phantom power and 2 decent channels of preamplification. Review here:http://www.mojopie.com/buddy.html

3. http://www.carvin.com/products/single.php?ItemNumber=PHW22&CID=MIC

4. If you need to record more than 2 channels simultaneously, check out the Yamaha mixers. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7...g=rec/s=mixers/search/detail/base_pid/630048/

The Nady, Phonic, and Behringer stuff is inexpensive but not highly regarded.

Something to keep in mind: I started out with a cheap mixer, was not satisfied, replaced it with the DMP3, and have been very satisfied with the DMP3 ever since. As someone has said on these boards, "buy cheap, buy twice". Considering one of the offerings from M-Audio may save you from having a paperweight with knobs on it down the road. Best of luck.
