But they aren't level one domains! i.e. not everyone in the world can access the DNS registered to that name.

Internic is the ONLY true DN registrar
 
Explain what you mean man... Because I have purchased domains through dotster for about 3 years for clients etc. I have never had anyone say my sites wouldnt work or have trouble connecting/downloading etc..

What about FrontPage?

PHP is a Linux-based setup, therefore no FP2K...

Anyone have any good deals out there for webhosts with FP2K support?

I am using FP2k on my site with phpwebhosting as well. All you have to do is ask them to install the extentions when you signup and there ya go... If you are not a total noob to websites then phpwebhosting rocks. If a person is really new to doing websites then they might want to find a host with great live phone support which of course is going to cost more... I would say 9 bucks is a hell of a deal.. I was paying 24.95 for a long time with another host and got not NEAR what I am getting now. Only thing they had was phone support BUT that is not worth the extra 14.95 per month when I think in a years time I used it once.
 
Hey Shakes I went and listened to some of your tunes. I'm not a real goat roper but I am being brought into the fold of Country music although my roots are progressive Rock. Anyway some real nice tunes sone great fiddle and slide guitar. Really feel like every tear is a hit. I think some Hammond B-3 with a leslie in the back would enhance it substantially. Great stuff keep up the good work guy!
 
That phpwebhosting looks good, but has anyone used a hosting service that allows for ASP and DB access? I found one site so far, Brinkster.com that has ASP 3.0 and creation of Access DBs for storage. Not the ideal situation if the site is gonna get a lot of traffic, but at least they offer the support and I don't think my site will be pushing even the small limits of Access anyway. They even have .NET funcationality if you use .NET enabled VB.

Halfpricehosting.com is another one that seems to offer lots of extras for around $13/month, but it costs more for use of Access DBs. They want a setup fee of $35 too.

Anyone have experience with either of these places, or know of another ASP/Windows based hosting service less than $15/month?

Thanks for the site. If that Readyhost is fast I think we have a winner. They even say they guarantee 99% uptime, while this other place I'm trying doesn't guarantee uptime whatsoever. I got a free month with no setup fee with www.atfreeweb.com, so I'm gonna give them a shot. Then if they aren't very good I think I'll try Readyhost. Plus $25/year for a SQL DB is unheard of on all the sites I looked at today... the cheapest one wanted $14/month for access to an MS SQL database. I don't have the version here and have yet to use the .NET stuff in VB anyways, so no big deal on that part.


If you sign up with them, let me know how it goes. One thing that cracks me up is they mention their uniformed guards and "biometric hand scanners" used in securing the server rooms... just put a lock on the door, lol.

Question time: what about password access for webhosted sites? It is common? Is it possible? I want some webspace for, uh... now what do real artists call it? Ah! Yes - 'work in progress'. I don't want public access to work in progress.

I'm posting my reply to your PM here, so that others may benefit from the info.

So far I have not had any problems with Readyhosting. The setups are FAST. I had one/two uploads lock up on me, but that has happened to me at every host I've tried (might be a FrontPage thing?).

They (ReadyHosting) allow you to set up a password protected directory (using their control panel), which I think would suit your needs.

I don't know how FTP savvy you are, but you'll need to learn those ropes if you want to use ReadyHosting (or any other webhost, for that matter).

I mentioned this elsewhere but GeoCites is allowing you to upload and download mp3's again now. 15 mg of space. That's enough for short demos.

As far as the domain thing goes, depending on how important that is to you, you might consider just using a shortcut url.

beam.to is a good one. I've got an informational page (not about music) which uses a beam.to url at:

Give it a wirl. Most shortcut url services are free.

Also, click on the "brainwave" link at the top and it'll take you to a page I developed for a guy who gives away brainwave audio files. It's on a GeoCities free server and you can see if it downloads mp3's fast enough for you.

A free account at Geo plus a free shortcut url might be good enough for most folks....
 
I also have an ftp acct. with artistcollaboration.com.Its 100 meg and its free.I put all my text-based stuff on my geocities site and post .mp3, .wma and .asf files on artistcollaboration.I also include for reference an at&t site of my brother.

Password protection is EXTREMELY simple with any *nix based webhost. All you need is to create/configure htaccess files for each directory you wish to password. If you pay for this feature, FREAK OUT, because you shouldn't!

Just do a search on .htaccess files, read up, drop one in your directory and see if it works! If you've done it right, and the server supports it, you'll have password protection.

Keep watching for NoWhere's full hosting solution.... Should be ready in the newyear.

I've been looking around at some of the mp3.com type sites including yours, garageband.com and a few others. One thing I noticed when doing test downloading of files was that mp3.com had the only streaming audio (low bandwidth downloads) that didn't cut in/out/rebuffer, etc while listening. If memory serves me corect I think they used 24k files for streaming as apposed to the 32k that you and virtually all the others use. You might want to look into that. I use a typical 56k modem and generally connect at 50 or so. I personnally would rather have a 24k stream that didn't cut out than a 32k that did even though it sounds a tad better.

Please don't take that a a harsh cirticism; it's not meant to be at all. Just trying to be helpful. Good luck with it!

Actually, we do have 24kbps streaming, it's just been disabled until the NWR3 release, you will notice this on some of the older files that were uploaded.

Each file has to be down-converted after it is uploaded for streaming at lower bandwidth. This was done originally on a MS NT system. Now that it is all *nix based, I have to re-implement it. But, rather than implement it on the old interface, I'm implementing it on the new one. Their will be some other changes as well, to improve the quality of the playback for lo-fi users.

Also, bandwidth is currently limited (as opposed to the old massive OC-192 lines)... I don't have the money to keep the massive pipes at the moment, but once the sales programs begin, the money goes towards the lines.

Likes me said, keep watching. I'm not just talking about mp3 hosting by the way (Just so you know, the whole principle of NoWhere is NOT mp3 hosting, we do way more outside the net, but NWR3 will reflect that.) The 'full' hosting package is just like all those 'other' hosting companies, php, cgi (pl), etc. etc. on very fast, reliable machines (some of which I built myself, and most of my systems run an average of 9 months before requiring even a reboot!), and very fast pipes.... But, all in due time, and ONLY for independent recording artists/musicians!!

Anyways, like I said, keep your eyes open...
