I've recently bought 2 pedals and I was wondering what the best way to line them up is? I already have a dist pedal (SansAmp GT-2), and have just bought a Boss NS-2 noise suppresser and and Boss CS-3 Compresser Sustainer.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks:D

I would put the noise gate first, then the compressor, then the distortion, but that's just my opinion. I'm sure others would think different.

I'd probably go gate--->distortion--->cs-3

of course, i'm not familiar with your distortion pedal - so i'm not sure how well it's bypass works.

why don't you just try different routes until you find one you like the best? with three pedals, it's not that difficult.

Why put gate first? It's not going to be very effective with distortion unless it's after it since distortion is what is going to be putting out noise. I don't know about the compressor positioning, but probably before the distortion would be okay.

always compress first and gate last, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

Compressor>GT-2>Gate. Why would anyone suggest putting the gate first? It wouldn't even function correctly unless your guitar has a built in preamp.

I thought the rule was to put the compressor before the fuzztone. I'd put the gate right before the amp so it squashes all the hiss and buzz from the preceeding pedals in the chain.

If you're using effects pedals through an effect loops on the amp the chain should be Volume > EQ > Overdrive pedal > Distortion Pedal > Chorus/Delay/Flange > Noise Gate.

I think it's better to put the noise gate before the FX so the delay and reverb are allowed to decay naturally instead of having their tails chopped off.

The cool thing about the NS 2 is that it has a send and return function. I own a CS 3 and NS 2. I'd put the compression first, then the Gate, then run the Gate's Send to the Distortion In, and the Distortion Out to the Gate's Return. Finally, hook the Gate's out to the Amps input. This will stop your Distortion Unit feeding back when you're not playing, and it's also unlikely that a) You'll need to gate clean tones and b) You'll need to run the Distortion and Compression at the same time, as distortion naturally compresses.

If you're adding time-based modulation like Delay and Chorus or a Volume pedal, run them after the NS 2 Out. I have about 8 stomp boxes in my pedal chain - mostly Boss - and that's how I hook them up.

I've been using the NS2 and CS3 for many years now, and I've always put the CS3 in the loop of the NS2. Same goes for any noisy effects that I'd rather have gated (flangers, choruses, etc.). I don't use a distortion pedal so I don't know where I'd put it in my chain, but I definitely stand by having the compressor inside the NS2's loop.

Remember that the CS3 is a compressor/sustainer. It's almost more of an overdrive when you use high sustain and level settings. At least that's how I use it, not as a normal compressor to tame peaks. In my type of application for the CS3, it generates a lot of noise. so the loop of the NS2 is the natural place for it for me.

Yes you can up the gain on it...mostly I use it for hony tonk or bluesy double stop lead. Some of the pre-sets on the boss site are quite handy.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll just test out all the different ways you's have suggested :)
