Boss BD2 or SD1

I have no intention of ever being a shredder, I'll play mostly blues and a little classic rock on a Strat. I don't have easy access to a shop where I can demo them or I would.

If you're playing through a tube amp, save some money and try either the SD-1 or even a DOD Overdrive Preamp FX50, now known as the Overdrive Preamp/250. Brand new they only run around $30.00, or you can hunt down a "vintage" unit on E-bay. I got mine, made in the early 80's I believe, for around 20 bucks. I have used it through tube amps and solid state, and IMO it sounds really good either way, especially if you're looking for a bluesy sound. If you insist on a Boss unit, I would suggest the SD-1 though. Controls are the same on both pedals (tone/volume/gain), but the SD-1 is cheaper by 30 bucks.

Anyone got change for a nickel? ;)

It5's a surprisingly difficult question to answer... my personal response would maybe be the SD-1, but also I recommend the ibanez tube screamer (esp things like the keeley mod) with a tube amp... I have tube screamer through a marshall ... lovely sound but then what I may like someone else may hate...

Can you give us a couple of comparison bands/songs or something more to go by?

Cheers,
Steve

I have the SD-1 and like it quite a bit as a level/gain boost into my amp. The thing about the SD-1, is that it has kind of a treble boost effect. It tends to to make an amp quite a bit brighter than it ordinarily is. I use it with a 120 watt tube amp and a 4x12 cab, so I have low end to spare. The SD-1 gives it a nice crisp 'bite' - but if you have an amp that is already bright, you might not like the effect.

I currently use a TS-9, which is fantastic with my LP Studio - but doesn't give enough grunt with my SCN-equipped Strat.

I recently tried out a Pro-Co Rat, and would highly recommend it.
I'm going to be getting a dual rat so that I can have one setting for the Gibson and one for the Fender :)
