Hi guys

I have been looking at the Peavey Pvm 480 mic.
I will be using for drum overheads and acoustic gtr sterero micing.
Is there anything I should be wary of with this mic?

Thanks

Lee.

I've heard that the Peavey mics are actually made by Nady. Izzit true?

nothin useful to add, but i have a Peavey PVM520i dynamic and its a very nice mic.....

I have one, I'm very fond of it on hi-hats. crisp, not biting. Haven't used it on much else, and don't remember what it sounded like when I did. It made it's debut in my live rig, found it's niche, and there it has stayed since.

Besides the one Gidge mentions, the Peavey mics kinda' suck.

And I'm not one of those guys who just assumes all things Peavey are ass. I like some of their guitar amps in fact -- Classic20, 30, Delta Blues, etc. Love 'em. 5150 -- has a distinct, signature sound that works. Their AMR mixers were some of the best values in audio in their day . . . the VMP-2 will go down as a classic tube mic pre.

Some good stuff from the folks at Peavey, but most of their mics you can take or leave.

I borrowed and couple from a friend and played around with them for a few days. Very bright and brittle sounding to me. Besides that they are way over-priced and extremely noisy. MXL 603Ss or Oktava MK012s (if you can get them <$100) are way better SDC mics IMHO.

Peavey has made a bunch of mics over the years.
So to say Peavey mics suck is kinda a broad stroke.
I have a Peavey T-9000 Tube mic that I wouldn't trade for anything. They also made a killer set of studio monitors for a few years.
If Peavey wanted to make the best recording mic on the planet there is no doubt in my mind they could.

If they could make the best sounding microphone on the planet why dont they? That might make them some money.

Why stop production on product that makes you money just to prove you can do it.

Over the years Hartley has dabbled in high-end gear. Hint.......He owns Crest Audio.

It's also hard to compete with China these days.

That's a hell of an endorsement.

Peavey is an anomaly. I can think of no other company that makes such a wide range of products, and makes stuff in all categories which ranges from abysmal junk to seriously ass-kicking equipment.

I've owned a lot of Peavey gear over the years and it's all been passable and durable, but not too inspiring.

It's tough to make a lot of stuff well. One of the few companies that comes close is Yamaha. How many companies make the guitar you're recording, the recorder, the CD burner, the monitors, and even the motorcycle you ride to the gig?

They don't make mics though.

Good point.
There are three industry giants that set the pace.
Yamaha
Roland
Peavey
These three Companies make up almost half of all of musical instrument sales worldwide.
