Hey ,

Ive been recording for a while but have just got into the fine art of amp recording and heavier material. This is something that is quite new to me in those terms and especially with amps in general , so I turn to you guys to help me out with some things and hopefully it will help others in the same situation as myself.

I play through my Peavey JSX 2 x 12 combo , generally through hi gain and on the crunch setting. My problems are just maybe occuring my from my desire to have the absolute sound i want direct from the amp (which you should have I guess) , what is really bothering me is my lack of knowledge of how i should level my amp to the recording phase. I want to have the hottest signal i can but when i do this i feel like im losing / lacking the tone with the heavy material I am wanting for this current project . (Listen to "the clincher" by chevelle and you will have a good idea of what kind of guitar sound i want)

The jsx does deliver wonderfull tone out of the amp , so i think it is my micing technique , and like i said I have not had much experience with micing amps. At this time im using really high quality dividers (3) in a triangle surrounding the amp at a distance of about 2 feet. I mic on a single cone with a 57 just off the cone and an ev neo267a on the outer edge , and if im feeling lucky il throw an audio technica 4033cl bout 6' feet away downward facing. I think you guys know what im trying to say when Im just not feeling what im recording across. And for processing im using a mindprint envoice mkII tube mic pre and eq control (freaking amazing) as a channel strip so I am trying to tame some of my unwanted tones.

I know this seems like this thread is going no where but I have been going crazy trying to get this right , so here are my main questions that I would like clarification.

1) What is the desirable levels at which I want to introduce the signal to my recording system (creamware scope) 16 channels of 44.1 - 96 Khz , 8 channels of 48.0 Khz

2)What are some tips on how to get that amazing heavy end crunch with a really good tone quality to run across with it?

3)Dynamics control i should investigate

Im not looking for the magic button nor the answer that will solve all my problems , but useful knowledge goes a long way in this industry.

Cheers
Neil
