Does anyone know what type of wood pearl forum shells are made from?

Poplar.....i think. Same as Export shells.

I think the older exports were Basswood.

They are made of the infinate unidenified wood. They are actually most likly a blend of many types of wood maybe basswood and mahogany.

the kit in question is 5 years old..... I keep hearing "phillipene mahogany" for the shells from other sources. but knowone seems to really know. anyone know for sure?

The proboem with the bottom of the line kits, is that they typically are made with whatever is available at the time. The price of these grades of wood changes with the gas rates (Former cabinet builder - I've used whole forests worth of "Philippine Mahogany". It's a low grade luan. What does that mean? It is what they call a plywood made from between 1 to 5 "select" woods layered between two veneer "skins" (5 inner plys + 2 skins equals a "7 ply" veneer.)

Previously, up through the 1960's and early 70's, Ludwig drums were made from whaever was on hand. In fact, it wasn't uncommon for an entire drumkit to be made of different kinds of wood! (i.e., a Mahogany Floor toom, a Maple Kick, a Poplar rack tom, etc.)

That's the reason old Ludwig's are PAINTED on the inside of the drums!
So much for the "Myth" of the "All Maple " Ludwig kits.

The first 2 all maple Ludwig kits belonged to Carmine Appice and John Bonham - and these were made several years before Ludwig actually offered this option to the public.

damn!!!

bought a 70's ludwig kit a few months back and was wondering why my kick had a grey coat of paint on the inside - the toms are not painted. does that mean that my kick isnt maple? still sounds great, so it doesnt really matter!

I know gretsch today still uses a sealer inside their drums so it is porblay a sealer that makes the drums resonant better.
