Its time to coin up for another cheap drumset... my old early 90s Pearl Export kit has its fair share of battle scars from being lugged around the country, and is going to replace the even worse kit as the beater kit...

Which one of these sucks the least... or if anyone else has any suggestions in that sub 1k range.

make your own. buy the shells from companies like precisondrum.com If you are on a budget and are handy i would recommend this. I did it and my set sounds way better than any of those you listed and it only cost about $500 ish

HEy fenix....Do you have any pics of this setup? the one you built?

I'll second Fenix's suggestion. I built my kit, and I love it.

Tama Rockstar

Hey i think out of the sets you have listed i would go with the Tama's. Tama's hardware blows any of the others out of the water. The Pearls are not good, at that price point. I used to own one. The Yamaha's sound pretty good, but again i think the tama's are a better value. I own Tama, and i love them. With the right heads they will sound just awesome. But if you can make drums...that would be another cool option. I haven't that ability, but i know that the drums that i have, although they are not top of the line by Tama do sound better than many other drummers high, high end kits which goes to show that it isn't always about price that makes something better. Out of the list i would go with Tama, if you no how to build them do that. I tend to think of Tama's being a great rock/metal drum. Hope this helps.

Building them is definately looking like an option. Any more good links for places that can supply maple shells that have all the machine work done?

I like the Maple with the Black Hardware... Mmmm...

another idea - if you're willing to spend $1K, you could get a custom kit, built to your specs with quality maple shells...

I've seen this company get high marks from more than one drummer:
http://www.conawaydrums.com/index.html

you can get a five piece for right under a thousand...

having said that - I think that difference between the 3 kits that you mentioned is really in the hardware. I don't like pearl tom mounts at all. tama and yamaha have similar 'omni ball' type of tom mounts. in my book, it's kinda a tossup between those two.

Many thanks for the link!

Another idea is to buy used. Check out Ebay...some great deals to be had.

Also, if you're talking sub $1000, there are some better sets out there. If you have extra hardware, etc. look into getting a shell kit of some type. Pearl Session Custom (all maple shells) and Pacific kits (also all maple-model name escapes me) are a good starting point. Good luck...
