This may have been posted before but here goes.
Im using cakewalk on a laptop. Ive created a great drum pattern but now I need to record it into track 3 of my Roland VS1680. How do I connect the pc to the VS and how do i configure it?

I have the following:
Toshiba Laptop with USB port.
Roland VS1680 with xlr, jack & midi sockets
Midi sport usb-midi device thingy-me-bob.
midi cables
usb cables

I thought laptop to midisport using usb, midi sport to VS using 2 midi cables.
I may be wrong.

Sounds like the way to go. But what are your intensions? To record the beats as audio (wav) or MIDI?

To record the drum track just like another instrument so I assume as an audio track.

Then you also need to connect the VS1680-output the the Line In on the laptop. MIDI only transmit data (note on, note velocity, etc), not audiosignals.

Right, so, 1 cable (one end small jack to laptop line in, 2xrca jacks on the other end to VS1680 Aux1 output) then what? connect them using the midi cables as well?

Sorry if i sound really thick, this is all new to me.

You don't need the MIDI-cables unless you're planning to sync the VS1680 to Sonar/HS/whatever.

Just press play on the VS and record on the laptop.

I need it the other way around!!

I have already got my drum/bass pattern on my laptop! I need to record them as a track on my VS.

sorry to be a pain!

Then just connect the Line Out on the computer to the Line In on the VS1680. Press record on the VS1680 and play on the computer. :)

As easy as that? Mini stereo jack from soundcard line out to RCA jacks into the line in on the VS.

thanks very much, i'll let you know my results when I try it tmrw night.

Thanks for your help, I owe you one.

You can use MIDI to synch the VS with Cakewalk.
If you're not into cutting, pasting or looping this may not be an issue for you.
Being in synch makes your life much easier should you want to change things down the road.
