I was reading with my m-audio interface you cannot use pc speakers as monitors, why not? I have 200 watt speakers, why can't I plug in the out lines on my interface.. this is feasible right? thanks

Oh I am new to this and cannot figure anything out.. gezzzzzz had it a month and have not even recorded anything.
oh tried plugging my speakers in the outs on the interface, and made the interface my default sound card got nothing.

The power capacity of the speakers means almost nothing. The reason you probably won't want to use them is that they probably aren't particularly accurate. When you mix you'll naturally try to compensate for the speakers' imperfections, and that won't sound right on other speakers. If you mix on speakers that are more accurate then your mix will sound decent on many different speakers.

If you want help with your interface we'll need more that the brand, we'll need the model, your OS and DAW.

Now that I have the Fast Track C600 which has 3 separate monitor outs, I've got my CREATIVE brand external speakers with subwoofer attached to my 3rd for mix down reference. Good to see what it will sound like. I would like to get something that sounds like a car stereo on my 2nd monitor setup, saw someone selling some little cube speakers that are supposed to help with that.

Are the speakers active? Do the have a power supply and volume control?

There's no reason you can't use them, it's just that it's not really the best way to monitor music.
It's like studying art with shaded glasses.

Computer speakers tend to exaggerate the bass too much. And the plastic cases sound horrible at a volume suitable for monitoring (70 - 80 dB SPL).

I use a Bowers and Wilkins Zeppelin Air for monitoring, alongside a pair of HD 600 Sennheisers...I use the Senns for mixing bc the B&W does over emphasize the bass, but if you have a good pair of cans, it is feasible.

Dam I feel moody tonight!
Some have already answered your question, but here's my take. You can use any speaker, any amp, any cords. We have this idea that "studio" is some kind of shrine. We need the gear, we need the acoustic dampening. Shit, we even go againt our wifes, putting the desk in the middle of the room.

Truth is, use what you got, buy what you can afford, and the rest will play itself out.

Bouldersoundguy--- I have m-audio mobile pre, windows 7 64bit, I7 processor, and the Pro tools SE. I have not worked with it much.
I can listen to the demo songs, through my headphones, tried pluggin the speakers in and get no sound out. I recorded my acoustic, plugged in, and cannot get any playbace sound.. very frustrating, thanks

Steenamaroo--- not sure what you mean by active, have there own power supply, and volume, separate subwoofer and main, they are kilpsch THX 2.1

thanks All

Amen to that! I was reading in TapeOp last night, an issue from last year, and Brendan Benson was talking about how Daniel Lanois recorded his album in some old house in new orleans, no sound dampening, they used live sound everywhere and called it part of the sound. I'm going to quit worrying about it all and just get the equipment I really need, like more mics and cables, settle on a DAW and get to the process of writing and recording, it will sound good coz it will be my sound.

As for reference, you can usually pick up some M-Audio BX5as for $125-150 used. They are sturdy and reference well enough. You can use the PC speakers until you can afford it. Just get to work!

Buy this. Connect 1/4" ends to Line Out 1/2 on the rear of your Mobile Pre, and your Klipsch to the 1/8" female end. :)
