HEY, BUDDY! HOW 'BOUT A COURTESY FLUSH, OK??!!

Dog, Profesional Strength Liquid Drano can't do shit to these pipes man.

Gotta call Roto-Rooter. :p

Alrighty then,

I need a garage studio that will work for just about anything. From Rock, to pop, to church music. And I am now planning on about 12K.

Here's what I have so far...

2000 for a computer, whichever I get
869 for 1 A&H Mixwizard 16
552 each for Mackie HR824's
800 for a Sytek MPX-4ii Preamp
438 for a JoeMeek VC1Qcs Pre
600 for Peavey VMP2 Tube Pre
2 Delta 1010's - 520 each
Shure KSM32/sl - 491
Neumann TLM103 - 650
3 Shure SM57's - 74.62 Each
2 Shure SM58's - 94.33 Each
3 Marshall MXL 603's - 69.35
1 Marhsall MXL 2001 - Free
AT Pro 25 Kick Mic - 103.38
Lexicon MPX500 - 338.55
Lexicon MPX500 Version 2 Software Upgrade - 72
2 FMR Audio RNC's - 154.99 each
1 Faceplate - 50
Cakewalk Sonar 2.0XL - 249
Antares Auto Tune DirectX Plugin - 199.99
Construction - 300
Acoustic Treatment - 600
Wiring - 300

This is what I need my computer to work with, and how much money I have budgeted. So tell me what you think I need.

This is the computer I've planned so far...

Soyo P4ISR Intel P4 Socket 478 Motherboard w/ Raid and SCSI Reader - 135
Pentium 4 2.2 GHZ - 228.67
Leadmen Elec. USA ATX Case - 64.99
3Com 10/100 Ethernet Card - 25.02
2 ViewSonic 15" LCD Panel - VG150 - 355.62 each
2 IBM 7200 RPM 120GB Hard Drives - 137.69 each
Plextor 40x12x40x CD-RW - 126.50
PNY Verto NviDia GEForce4 Ti4400 Video Card - 218.09
Artec 16x DVD-Rom Drive - 49.99
512 MB RD-Ram (rambus) PC800 - 166
1.44 MB Floppy - 17.99

I'm not all that up on Soyo boards, but if you want stability, I'd grab an Intel board. You know it's gonna work.

Well, Tyler, congratulations! Your equipment "to buy" list has improved dramatically since your first post! You have the makings of a fine studio.

Since you asked for critiques, I'll nitpick a little, but my thoughts fall more into the realm of personal preference rather than actual criticism.

My immediate thought is that you will probably spend more for cabling than the $300 you have allotted, especially if you include a patch bay or two, which you haven't specifically listed. You're hardly going to want to be crawling around behind your racks everytime you want to use a preamp, a compressor, or an effects box - so i would think a patchbay or two would be pretty important. Neutrik makes a pretty sturdy 1/4" balanced model for under $100 (48 points). I imagine at the $300 figure you will be soldering your own cables, but even raw wire and connectors add up when you are cabling up an entire studio. Plan to AT LEAST double the $300 figure.

Now, to nitpick on the mics: you've made some good basic choices. If I were going with the same general selection I might make the following adjustments:

•Substitute a KSM27 for the KSM32. That gives you another true large diaphragm option, with a fuller sound than the 32, and for quite a bit less money.

•Upgrade the Pro 25 to an ATM25 or a D112. Your kick drum mic is not the place to cut corners.

•With 3 SM57's, and all those condensers, do you really need a couple of SM-58's too? I would trade the two SM58's for an EV RE27, or a Sennheiser 421. That gives you a large diaphragm dynamic option for floor tom, brass, some vocals, etc. An SM7 might be another option which, though not a large diaphragm, would give that type of sound.

To reiterate, there's nothing really wrong with your mic list as it is, but I think it could be tweaked a little with the above suggestions to really give you an enviable cabinet.

Once you start making money, you may want to start putting aside a percentage towards that killer vocal mic that will really knock out the clients. As far as bang for the buck, IMHO nothing beats the Lawson L47MP.

Good work, Tyler!

Ok, well, I'm getting the 58's for free, I don't really know why I put the price. The kick mic was just something chessrock suggested, and I didn't really look at it much. Uh, I have heard that the 27 is better. Why is this? It would save me some money that I could then turnaround and spend on wiring. Also, I didn't include the patchbay in that list, which is going to be a 48 point REaN i think. I dunno, anyway, uh, after I buy this I don't expect to buy anything for a while due to the fact I'm 15, and will need a car shortly afterwards, and then college, and then get married, well I'll proly buy before that, but this stuff is expensive for me at my young age.

It's kinda funny, but this whole little "expidition" started out with thinking about buying Fostex PM-1's to go with my behringer 1804x and Cakewalk Guitar Tracks 2.0.

I looked at the Lawson, hey now I know what look that one marshall mic is imitating. I think the 2005 or something (guessing totally)

For all of you people saying that Macs were never crappy, you are actually wrong. In the
early 90s Macs had extreme problems with there OS and just about went under (they
were pending the largest Chapter 11 ever).

You were what, 5 then? I'm sure you know all about how things were way back then.

Seems to me you had already made up your mind you didn't want a Mac so whats up with the thread title? Trolling for flames?

Your buying all this gear and you don't even have a car? Must be nice to be spoiled. :p

Damn. Don't tell me that you aren't in a position to buy shit until after you get a car (can u drive before 18 in your state?). You can learn a lot about gear from just reading and asking a few well-worded questions. You don't have to front like you're ready to buy when you aren't. Check the other thread Tyler, for what it's worth.

You've reminded me why I...

No, I said I'm not buying anything else, AFTER I buy this stuff. Then I have to buy a car, and then I can do other stuff.

The pro25 will do you just fine. I think Harvey even recomended them at one time. The Re'an is a good choice.

I would say in the hands of Harvey, some wax paper stretched over a Dixie cup would sound good. But for the rest of us who might not be quite so skilled, you will get a considerable bump in performance from the ATM125 or the D112 over the Pro25. And I still say kick is not the place to cut corners. (BTW, I'm not dissing BDGR, whose opinions I respect. Just giving a different opinion based on my experience as an owner of all three of those mics).

1/4" patch bays are almost universally built fairly crappy (compared to TT), but the Neutriks are about as good as you can get in that price range. The Re'ans may be good too, but I can't remember - as it's been a while since I owned one. Are they configurable (open vs. half-normalled)? That's a very important feature.

It turned out I was looking at the ATM25, but asked for the price for the pro25, which I was looking at before, are they a lot more?

He's only 15. It's common topic fodder around the board these days... :D

WATYF

I was 7 when I first touched a mac. The 256 colors WERE amazing, but I always liked dos and win 3.11 better.
