Patching XLR w/ TRS?

In efforts to clean up my mobile setup, I'm thinking about using a typical 1/4" TRS patchpay and patching everything through it, including mics.

I would be making my own cables, so it's no big deal as far as cables are concerned. Each mic cable would have a TRS plug on one end, and a female XLR on the other, while the snake going to the mixer would have TRS plugs on one end and male XLRs on the other. Is this a bad idea? Will my signal get messed up?

Thanks for any replies.

Not if you'll stick to standard wiring:

Pin 1 - Ground (Sleeve)
Pin 2 - Tip (Hot)
Pin 3 - Ring (Cold)

I've made cables like that in the studio I used to work in, and it worked great.

you'll have to be careful not to patch while phantom power is on

You should consider putting everything EXCEPT your preamp inputs into your patchbay.

For your mic preamps, use a stage snake or wire up an XLR female wall panel or rack panel. What's the big deal if everything isn't in one rack unit? At least you won't have to worry about phantom power if you keep it seperate.
