Patch Bay Noise

Hey all,

I've been told, if i get a patch bay, it'll add some noise to the recording. Is their anyway to avoid this?. In my studio, the amps and kit, are in another room, around 30ft away from the DAW. And i really need some patchbays for the long amounts of cable.

Balanced cables or shorter runs. You really won't know how much noise is added if any until you hook one up to your system.
 
That is TOTALLY unture, who ever told you that was using a patchbay that was wired wrong or they were doing something worng. Every single Pro Sudio in the world uses patch bays and there is no extra noise, or humm or buzz if they are built correctly.

Adding a patchbay add about 3" of extra "material" to your wire. You will have no problem with a bay if it's done right. I am building bays every week and I have NEVER had a problem. There are the occasional pieces of gear that buzz, that end up needing a audio ground dropped or something, but you won't notice any change.

Can patchbays be used as connectors, say i got 5ft leads, and need to add on another 30ft, could i do the following


5ft lead --> Patch Bay ---> 30ft Lead

And use it as an extender?

It can be used for anything invloving passing signal. I would get a 35' cable instead!

You are going to be spending alot of $$ to use it as a extender. A TT bay wired is going to start at more than $1000

What are you trying to do let me know, maybe there is a better way to do it!

FYI...The $1000+ bay isn't just for the bay, that would a full wired 96 point TT bay, with a average length of wire coming off of it. The bay's run about $280 or soemthing like that.

But a $90 bay off of Ebay should be fine.

Two things I would stay away from are...

Very old bays, it doesn't matter if it cost's 10 bucks or $2000 because the metal over a long period of time builds up corrosion, which will lead to intermitant connections.

Another thing I would stay away from buying used is a 1/4" feed through bay. 1/4" bays serve there purpose but the feedthrough bays have a much shorter life span. A 1/4" solder bay wouldn't be a problem.

I sell 48 pt Neutrik feedthrough bays new for $75 so, don't buy one for $90 if that was what you are looking @

1/4" patchbays are cheap enough that you should just get a new one. The 1/4" bays don't last all that long, and you could very well end up buying someone else's problems. Better to start with one that is fresh.
