Tannoy Proto-J

The Tannyo Proto J's arrived yesterday. My initial impressions are that they are an unbelievable bargain. I listened to some of my own mixes that had been done correctly using AKG K240S headphones, and some that were done incorrectly using Alesis Point Seven monitors. I can tell that the Proto J's are very, very accurate. Some reviews have remarked about something lacking in the bass, but it's not the case at all if you set them up properly. They are revealing of detail, but not so clinical as to be fatiguing. In fact, the upper mids and highs are ever so slightly recessed as to be very pleasant to listen to for an evening.

I'm glad I listened to reviewers on this forum that said the Proto J was great for double-testing mixes. In my case, I'll be using them about 50/50 with the AKG K240S or K240M headphones. I'll share additonal impressions later once I have used them more in recording/mixing.

If you're on a really tight buget you may wish to consider a good quality boom box rather than cheapo monitors. I was surprised by the detail in mine. I actually use three items, JBL book shelf speakers, a boombox and AKG 240M headphones. By bouncing around these three different playback systems, I am able to get decent mixes.

my 2 cents.
