Passive Studio Monitors @ $200

I apologize for having to post this, I really do, but it's been very, VERY difficult to find an appropriate answer while searching. I tried my best.

My father (well, and obviously myself as well) is looking for an inexpensive pair of passive studio monitor speakers, on a fairly strict budget of $200. He was looking at a pair of Alesis M1s, but I get that the general consensus is that they are inferior, judging by a lot of user's posts I've seen on this board and others. I've seen some pretty good things about the Event TR5, as well as the Yorkshire YSM1i. The only studio monitor's I've heard are the Alesis Monitor Two's, and I like them quite well, although I haven't done any mixing, just listening, and obviously have nothing to compare them with. I'm VERY new to audio recording, and my father has only limited experience, but I intend to learn what I can from him and continue on myself from there, as I may intend to make a profession out of this later on.

I've got the Alesis Monitor 1 MKIIs. I think they are great. I picked them over the Mackie HR824. I'd mixed on the Mackies before and it didn't translate worth a crap. They just made everything sound too good, the M1s seem to make me work to make it sound good but I've been very happy with how the mixes translated.
 
I've got the Monitor Ones as well. I sarcastically spoke of them as "crap" in another thread somewhere but they do a good job for how I use them.

I've got about $10000 or so invested into my "Home Recording" Hobby but if I was planning on upgrading certain "key" items in my recording chain I'd upgrade the monitors as well.

Example - I record into a Fostex VF160 16 track Digital Recording Unit. The Alesis M1's work just fine for what I'm doing with the Fostex. I'm an amatuer recording/mixing person as well... so again.. the M1's work just fine. While I've been learning the art of recording/mixing my stuff the M1's have been faithful to me. They've taken a beating with some loud music in the past and they've never failed yet.

If I ever plan on upgrading to some new monitors I'll definitely have use for the M1's elsewhere in the house.


You would do just fine with them. ;)
 
YO DV and Vision too:

They left out the KRK ST8 passives. The KRKs have an 8" woofer--Yorkvilles only 6.5.

I sold my Yorkvills quickly as they are good monitors--the KRKs are better, richer, and quite clean considering the low cost of around 200 + shipping.

But, there are many good monitors out there but not too many in the 2 bill range.

$200 monitors

i have a sense of impending backlash, but could i put in a feeble good word for Tannoy Reveals which are about £130 in the UK, so i guess about $200 or thereabouts.

i now have mackies, but i started on the tannoys and did three fairly competant albums that way - i still use them in my small editing room as well. i don't mix in there so the tannoys do just fine for me, and i know the sound too so it's not an issue transferring between the two.

they're not everyone's taste, but i liked them.

it's a bit of a minefield, but good luck!

red - ive used monitors from the high end like time alighned costing thousands down to the low end. i came to a conclusion as a result that all monitors whether or expensive or cheap - there is no perfect solution imho.
you can mix on the best around - but bear in mind most home playback environments - the people buying your music for example dont have the best rooms for playback or spkrs. so you need a variety of playback devices.
you might want to consider building your own. visit partsexpress.com
for example and there are numerous schematics on thenet for building
and kits of spkrs.
or maybe consider a pair of used yorkvilles. i dont know if 200 bucks is good for a new pair where you reside.
 
I'm still searching, but does anyone know where to buy the Wharfedale Diamond Pro 8.2 *PASSIVE* model? I've seen a number of the hi-fi (bookshelf) models, but from what I've read they're not shielded.
 
I think I've narrowed my search down a bit. My 5 options:

Alesis Monitor One MKII ($160, B-Stock)
KRK ST8 ($250)
Samson Resolv 65 ($150, B-Stock)
Wharfedale Diamond Pro 8.2 ($230)
Yorkville YSM1i ($238)

All prices include shipping. The B-Stocks may have cosmetic imperfections, but still retain full warranty.

Anyone want to pipe in and tell me what my best deal is?

Now for a list of a few other things where we have heard "bad things about" and don't think we'd bother with them.



1. Electronic Drumkits . I've heard only bad things.. I don't think I'd bother with em.

2. Recording Studios and Mastering Houses . Why dump a truckfull of money into these ripoff artists when 12 year old kids are mixing/mastering nearly the same quality in their bedroom after school.. before mom drives em to soccer practice? I've heard only bad things about these Recording/Mastering vultures. I don't think I'd bother with them.

3. Fender Strats and single coil pickups. I've heard only bad things about them. I don't think I'd bother with them.

UPS dropped my ESI nEar05's yesterday - and they are phenomenal.

I can't recommend them enough for this price range.
 
Tannoy Proto J

The Tannoy Proto J are $199/pair incl. shipping. Any reason why they weren't listed on this thread?? I heard them in a shop and liked them, but it was awhile back and cannot recall why I liked them.
 
ART SLM-1 are the same as the Yorkville YSM-1i's except they cost less... I'm waiting for a pair I've ordered myself right now.
