Passive Monitors?

I've been operating a hobby studio with an Alesis RA-100 and some Peavey (8") "Phase Reference Monitors" that I got circa 1991. You can laugh at my Peavey's, but I A/B'd them against some Active KRK 6's that I brought home from GC 2 years ago, and I brought the KRK's back because they didn't have the volume & clarity of the 'vintage' combo.

Well, one of the Peavey's has finally kicked the bucket and I need to replace them. On my last experience, I was a fan of the Mackie HR824's, but didn't have the $$$. Now I do, so I'm tempted to go get them.

But here is my question - I'm going to have a left over Alesis. I'm wondering if perhaps it would be a better choice to go out and pick up some Tannoy Reveals or their Precision 8's? (I liked the Tannoy's alot last time too)

Everyone always seems to preach Active, Active, Active. What's up with that? Why shouldn't I just pair some passive monitors with my ancient amp?

p.s. I know everyone is going to say "it depends what you like in your space." Well, it was a *pain* to get those KRK's home, set up, then box them up and bring them back. I'm trying to avoid doing that again by seeking 'the wisdom of the crowds.' Thanks!

KRK makes (or made) a passive monitor called the ST8. Really inexpensive and sounds very good in my opinion.

Peavey PRM308S Rock !

I have the same set of speakers and love them. But I need to recone them and cannot seem to find anything online so i can find out what I need to recone them with. Anyopne have any ideas ?

I have the peavey PRM's and can't find replacements either, I lost the baskets and have put temp replacements in but they are not as good, I agree that these are (were) very good, If anyone has any tips for a replacement driver I'd be interested. I have KRK 8's (which I love) and NS10's (which I hate) also

Contact Peavey. They will be able to direct you to replacement drivers for that monitor. If you can repair why change something your ears are intimate with?
