YOU SUCK!

Ha, no, just kidding. That's great. It's a really fresh and different arrangement of a really great old song. It shows a lot of original personality that goes way beyond the run-of-the-mill cover. It's the type of thing that gets people on the radio,... the REAL radio.

Keep up the good work, that's way cool, and I'm a big KISS fan.;)

Great job guys! I was blown away by this.

man, gotta love that Lt. Bob--is he da man or what?

Macle-Thanks for the listen man. When I originally came up with the notion of covering this, I wanted to use a really slutty sounding chic on vocals....

I think your vocals are good, but I don't blame you for wanting to get a sluttly chick involved in the collaboration. Maybe not necessarily singing, but a little humming might be nice. (I'm sure Gene Simmons would approve of that!) :D

Mind you, I've only heard the live version of Parasite before, but...
Good stuff, and certainly different. The snare sounds too 80's. You know, first compressed, then chopped off at the end. But then again, I'm always complaining about the drums. This tune sounds a bit like some songs from this finnish band "Hassisen Kone", because of the horns. That made some of their songs also very different sounding. Maybe horns are overlooked in rock in general, it seems, because they work greatly for me usually. I'm REALLY beginning to enjoy these collaborations now.

Hey Guys,

GT-Thanks a million for the listen, and the nice comment. As far as the "how to's" go, I think the Lt. pretty much covered that. I will mention one thing though. I have an 8 track 788, so i had to do a bunch of last minute mixing to get the space that i needed for the 5 tracks of horns that Bob put down. (He was also nice enough to send me a mixed horn grouping for just this reason, but i opted for the individual horns so that i could spread them out.) anyway....In the future i might try to get the collaboration started earlier, so that i can mix the horns into the basic tracks and avoid just plopping them on top of my somewhat finished mix. *note to self. Thanks again for the nice comments.

mixmkr-The beginning was to be part of the "slutty singer" idea....... you know the ole "slutty tramp girlfriend that bangs the mailman, and keeps you locked in the closet" story..... you know, that same ole soap opera fare:D

Sami-thanks a bunch for the listen my man..... I was actually looking forward to what you thought of this because I know that you too sometimes like to do things........"differently".
From what Ive read, you're probably buried in colabs, but if your interested, Ive got and idea involving 2 788's, and a duet from HELL...... lemme know:D

Caretaker9-..........My brutha...... Thanks for checking this out, and for the kind review. You are another person that i want to do a colab with...... but you know that. Deadlier guitar players do not exist!! ....Lemme know when you get some time.:D

A Reel Person-Thanks alot for the kind words.... .....Yea im a huge Kiss fan too. Its kinda hard to pick a remake from their rep. because they have so many great songs. My second choice was going to be "Strange Ways".

Crawdad-Thanks for the listen man...... "life #9" is in my "lifelong playlist" rotation. ...that was great work!

MacleLOL......... Im sure that he would.:D

Crankyone-...glad you made it back :D Ive never heard of the finnish band that you mentioned, but im gonna try and look em up. This was my first experience working with a horn "section", and i enjoyed it very much.... As generous a musician as the mad Lt. is, I have a feeling we are gonna be hearing alot of great sax in here in the future. Thanks for the listen.

thanks again, Mike

Great reinvention of the song... There's so many things to love. Eight tracks? The sound is totally original to me. I'm thinking of all the possibilities of what you all can do. Very impressed. Thanks for sharing. God knows I'd never hear anything this new on radio today.

They're probably hard to find on file sharing programs, but if you do, I'd recommend at least these songs:

Julkinen Eläin
Oikeus on voittanut taas
Kupla kimaltaa
Jurot nuorisojulkkikset
Rajat

The sound is pretty original, but you probably can't understand the lyrics, since they're in finnish. The band only lasted from 1980 to 1982, and made three great albums. There really wasn't any filler material in them.

Really cool!
Great playing all the way around, and the vocals rock!

Collaborations rule!?

Best to you,
Pete

Hi Guys,

ozraves- thanks for the listen man.

Cranky One- Im gonna try and lookem up. What label were they on?

B.Sabbath-.....on its way my brutha......

Muzeman- thanks for the listen and the kind words Muze, ...and you are right..... collaborations do rule!
:D

Geez Lou-eez!! That kicks ass in a big way. I'd like a little reverb on the sax please, thank you very much. Very, very, very cool.

Cranky One- Im gonna try and lookem up. What label were they on?

I believe they were on a label called "Poko records". I think the label got sold to EMI a few years back.

Very cool... Completely different as what I expected from a KISS cover. Nice! Don't know the song, if I didn't know I couldn't tell it was a cover!

Way cool solo btw Steve... Wow... I'm really amazed. Again. hehe. You can think of a way to teach me over the web? Educate me... drool. Damn, still got to finish that demo song I promised you I would post...

As for the mixing etc, the saxsolo really is too dry. Balance seems ok. On the harmonies I miss other horns. Those saxes layered give the same idea but it lacks something... But since I haven't seen any trumpetplayers around these parts...

The distorted guitar sits in the mix pretty good, but I think the sound is a little too buzzy. Sounds a little too much as a small sweet practice amp trying to be loud and mean.

Really dig the arrangement. Very nice ideas in there!

Hey again,
Track RatThanks for the listen bro,.......Here's my logic regarding the sax....... and believe me, being new at mixing horns, i am probably way off. The layerd horn groupings are pretty dry, this is really for one basic reason... lack of gear in the mix. I was using up all of my available verbs. The solo sax has verb on it as well as just a touch of chorus. I wanted to sweeten up the solo so it would sit well, but i didnt want it to sound too "wet and sloppy" Lt. Bob did such a nice job, I wanted his solo to sit well but i also wanted it to be clear and articulate. I would love to hear different points of view on this from people with experience mixing horns for my own personal knowledge. .....thanks again.

CrankyOnePoko....... gottcha...... i'll check em out.....thanks again

RoelHey bro...... well i mentioned my take on the sax mix above........ but, you noticed something that nobody has mentioned that im glad you've brought up. The guitar sounds.... I was farting around with a J-station, and came across a cool NIN(ish) buzzing guitar tone that was basically the fuzz head w/ no cabinet....... almost white noise....... completely distorted, but tight. Its tightness allowed me to really get staccato with the ryth. parts. To those out there who play with a J'station, check it out..... its a fun tone for certain things...... In this song I mixed it with an adjusted version of the J solo setting.
Thanks again for the listen and the nice comments.:D :D :D

I guess this is the first Kiss song I like :-)
The sax solo is pure madness!!

Hey Folks,

Giganova= Thanks for the listen man, Here's a few recommendations for those who arent real familiar with the "classic" Kiss....(I aint talkin about no Lickin up neither). ...Anything off of the first 4 albums.......Kiss, Hotter than hell, Dressed to Kill, or Destroyer......... .......and of course never leave "Alive" out of your listening rep. ....These albums represented an era when Kiss was regarded with a fresh attitude that some deemed punk. ....Mike Watt told me that, and he's old enough to know.:D

hey G, As you know I have a 788 and you use a 788.. What effects from the 788 did you use on the vocals? What's the vocal chain brother, share the wealth!! :D

sam

Hey Sami.....
Lessee.....I used the EQ/Chorus/Verb setting. ....and as i mentioned in your post, i scooped the piss out of the mids. As far as the exact chorus and verb settings...... I know that the chorus was very slight, and i think the verb was around 90 ms..... .....Im not sure of the exact settings because i tend to massage them around alot when im looking for the tone i need. If you want me to, I'll check it exactly tonight and PM you with the results. Lemme know. Later, G

thanks G, I usually use the chorus/reverb/ de-esser setting.. Did you use a mic pre? and what mic?

thanks man :D

sam

Guernica, wow! I love the way this one lays in there. A fine mix to my ears. Having never heard the original, I can't imagine it being any better than your remake. I mean, I never liked KISS but I like this!
Lt. Bob is a hell of a secret weapon. :D
I like the dry saxes, very funky and expressive, put me in mind of how Zappa would use them.
This rocks, man.

Mark

p.s. Thanks for hipping me to X, Exene, and John Doe.
