How to get this really cool guitar sound ?
What about EQ and FX ( is it flanger or chorus...?)

are you talking about a perticular song? dimebag uses alot of fx( wammy pedal, chours, flange) are you asking about his regular distortion sound? what album?

the beginning of walk is a 1/2 step string bend( dropped d tunning).theres no fx.

To sound like Dime: BUy the most horrible sounding solid state amp you can afford, and then take out ALL your midrange. Max out your gain bass and treble. Now get a guitar with active electronics and play. You could just buy that POS Warhead amp, but its like a grand for the head/or the combo. It has cheasy digital effects, but they are the ones Dime uses for some shit I've heard.

@ detuned6

of course there are a lot of FX !!!

1. noise gate
2. EQ´s
3. Flager or Chorus
4. Compressor
5. maybe a very little room reverb

There is no fx on that guitar especially no chorus or flanger. There is usually no need to use compression on dist guitar tracks. The reverb you hear is probably the room mic. What you hear is good amp, a good guitar and experience.
The only pointers I can give you:
Use a REAL amp none of that amp sim stuff.
if it's a combo amp lift it up from the floor.
When tweaking the sound listen to the guitar tone that's coming from the amp instead of being 5 feet away.
Use 2 mics a close-up mic and a condenser room mic.
Experiment with the mic placement
Play two tracks of the same thing with some variation if you want.
Pan one hard left the other hard right
Now manually lift one guit track so it starts a couple of ms later than the other.

MARTY, A NOISE GATE WILL NOT CHANGE YOUR TONE( THE GATE CUTS IT SO ITS TIGHT LIKE IN "WALK") DIMES EQ IS SCOOPED MIDS(HE USES THE RANDALL SOILD STATE AMPS) , THERES NO fX( FX TO ME IS FLANGE/ CHOURS ,BLAH BLAH) EVERYONE PROBLERLY USES COMPRESSION , REVERB( THATS SOMETHING YOU GOT TO TWEAK YOURSELF TO GET HIS TONE) DIMEBAG HAS LIKE A STACK OR TWO RUNNING IN THE ROOM WHEN HE HIS TRACKING= BIG ROOM SOUND. (SINGLE COILS AINT GOING TO CUT IT) WARLOCK SUMS IT UP GOOD.
ON THE "FAR BEYOND" ALBUM HE ALSO TRACKED A CLEAN STACK AND MIXED IT WITH THE DIST. TRACKS.

Actually, Dime's tracks shouldnt have too much natural reverb on them, they are recorded with his amp in a huge wooden box that has almost no air, just enough to let the amps "breathe" a bit. It would be a very tight reverb if any. COmpression is needed on distorted tracks sometimes. It gives it more "crunch" and a lot more sustain. Dime doesnt play a "good" amp. Its a powerful ass shitty solid state amp. When you scoop out all your mid's you ahve to blast so loud that it hurts in order to be heard. Thats why his amp is 300 watts or something ridiculous. Those are solid state watts though. I can't even imagine 300 real tube watts. Go deaf I'd imagine.

Ok. here's how he gets it .....

Dime uses a Randall solid state head. This gives hard dirty sound but to really boost it mega he has it going into a 32 band MXR graphic EQ. This really gives a HEEEEUUUUGGGEEE sound. However NOTE - he uses very VERY rare pickups which are amazing but no longer made. Seymor Duncan do an active type which emulates the sound he gets.

I get a Pantera like sound but using my most high gain pickuped guitar (standard Ibanez fully ktted out with EMG actives). I put my Line 6 AX212 into Soldana SLO100 mode. Lots of EQ. Mid scoop on the amp and hey presto. Heavy F**kin metal!
