Panning

This is something that should be very simple and for some reason I'm just not getting it. Maybe one of you fine folks can help me figure it out.

If I record a track mono lets say an acoustic guitar. I am using studio one. I then go into studio one and pan the track hard left, I still hear it from both channels. Same if I pan right. So no matter what I pan where, it all comes up the middle. Is this some type of problem with bussing or using a "stereo" effect maybe? Like doing a stereo compression? Is it turning the sound into stereo and sending out both channels even though I have it panned?

I'm absolutely certain this is something simple and I'm just being dumb, but I'm lost.

Correction: for some of the tracks (not all) if I pan it to the left, it's both channels. If I pan it to the right, it's silence.

It sounds like you have it going through a mono bus.
If something goes into a mono bus, it will always be center no matter where you pan in. Make sure any AUX buses, or effect return buses are in stereo, then the pan will work properly.

I always make every bus stereo because even if you want a mono effect, like a mono delay, as long as you leave it panned center through a stereo bus, it will stay center. Also, it gives you the ability to pan it where ever you'd like.

I would check your routing and make sure you don't have a mono bus someplace down stream.

As a test I removed all effects and busses from my vocal track. If I pan it left I hear it both left and right. If I pan it right I hear nothing. It goes to no bus (other than main out)

Hmm... physical connection in your chain someplace?

Here's a tech support solution you could try before you get too angry.
Shut it all off, turn it all back on.

Figured it out.

Studio One was routing out to channels 1 and 2 on my studiolive mixer. I only had firewire return enabled on channel 1, and it was panned up the center. So everything was coming up the center. Turned on return on channel 2 then panned channel 1 left and channel 2 right and now it works perfectly.

Thanks
