Well.....I'm sure you're familiar with my new, "Don't give a crap about the mix unless it sucks," philosophy and since this doesn't suck......I have no mix comments. Others have already dealt with that in extreme depth so I believe that's covered.

But the song.....very cool as usual but a more heavy raw sort of sound than much of your other stuff.
Do I hear a bit of Samicide influence in there maybe?
I particularly liked the harmony guitar parts.

When you make it big I would like to apply now for the sax/guitar/bass position please.

Great stuff! Great guitar playing. I've said it before - you've got lots of feel.
Only nit pick I can come up with is the section that starts at about 2:35 (what an awesome lead in to that part!). It sounds like the clean and dirty guitars could blend a little better. I noticed it a lot more in my stereo speakers than in my monitors. The clean guitar sounds a lot more in front than the dirty. Maybe you were trying for that, but it sounds a little off to me.

I'm glad to hear you're closing in on the album. Not that I don't have all the tunes on my computer anyway, but I'm excited to get my hands on it.

Thanks - when this kicked in it scared the shit out of me! Sounded like Roger Waters in a bad mood. Oh yeah, he's always in a bad mood. Seriously this is really cool. I love to hear one of the guys put a lot of thought and effort into arranging.

Pedullist- The drum samples I've been using don't require an actual duration to be set. A 1/16th tom is the same as a 1/2 tom. They ring out. I'm debating whether I want to call up an old drummer friend before I put this cd out. But my girlfriend has never commented on the drums, nor has any other non-musician. Now, don't get me wrong...I LONG for the real thing. But I'll probably wait and use a real drummer on the second album. This is the last song I'm recording for the first one. And it will probably be all fake drums. HOWEVER, the bass will probably be replaced by a real one where necessary. I'll keep you in mind for that over the next few days. What do you think of the bass notation, by the way? I know I would probably do things differently if I wrote the part with a bass in my hand, and I know I would like it better. It's also a lot more fun playing it. Anyway, we can pick all this up in emails...

(Hmmmmm, I might be wrong...but I feel like I've annoyed you a bit with that comment)

Hey, I'm just trying to help you make it sound a bit more like the real thing, until you've found yourself a friendly (and hopefully not very hairy) real thing. I know most non-musicians won't hear it, but I'm sure YOU must hear it. I don't mind fake drums (you know that), but I like to make 'm sound as real as I can (or as fake as I can, I can go both ways). Only trying to help here....not to annoy you :)

Anyway.... ;)

What I'm trying to explain is...(click me, other people too...might be useful for you guys also) :)

I'll mail you on the bass part...will have to listen to it a bit more to comment on it.

:)

On the bass parts:

To be frank Tom: you always come up with great parts IMO. Real bass parts, not just root notes of the guitarchords (common 'guitarist-who-tries-to-play-bass' problem), but parts that offer good counterpoint to the rest. More locked to the drums than to the guitar. In other words: you play like a real bass player. :)

Only nitpicks I can think of is (again) the length of some notes.

For instance at 2:13...the part itself is great. I wouldn't change a bit in that part except for the way how I'd play it. At 2:21 there's that nice descending walk (e-d-c-b-A, I believe), I think I'd personally play those more staccato (shorter). Or play the first two notes legato, and the rest staccato. I would also use more 'ghost' notes (real short ones, same note or fifth or octave) to make it a bit funkier. Whenever I use synth bass I slow down the tempo to halfspeed and play it real time. I let my fingers bounce on the keys a little (it's pretty easy at that tempo), playing short funky octave notes or just hit the same note twice. Then quantize it a bit (but NOT the length of the notes) and speed it back to normal tempo. Result is something more natural then you'd ever be able to achieve with note-by-note programming. I kinda know that from experience, since I started out programming real notes on a staff (yep, those black thingies) in Finale for Mac.... :D (in real music the real duration of a note is never exactly how it's written...a sixteenth can be shorter, but also longer)

It's only a few months ago my dequantization period started....:)

I feel like a real smartass telling you all this (feels like I'm trying to explain E=MC2 to mr. Einstein himself if you know what I mean ;) )...hope this is all helpful to you.

I've pulled the song down...

...to do some more work on it. Finally got to listen to it on a couple different car systems (my truck passenger window is smashed out, rendering it useless for mix checks) and the mids in the guitars are definitely doing some damage. I'm gonna clean that up and see what I can see...I have EXTREME difficulty guaging high mids on my Studiophiles. If anyone has suggestions on dealing with that, even if it's a recommendation on a new pair of monitors, send it my way please!

Robert Mark- Thanks.

Myx62- I'm not familiar with Max Webster. I'll check it out if I come across some. I'm glad you liked this...thank you.

mixmkr- haha. Ya know, the bit of guitar in the beginning you're talking about, I tried and tried to think of a way to revisit that but could find no way to come back to it that appealed to me. RE: vocals hard to understand- I think once I clean up my typical mid-range buildup in the guitars, the vocals will cut through just right (with perhaps a few tweaks), without having to crank their faders to pop/country levels. And thanks for the encouragement about a cd. I need that sort of kick in the ass, as I get overwhelmed by normal daily affairs! Thank you.

caryindy- Thanks Cary. Glad you like the guitars, as it is my main instrument, though peoples' voices stand out more I suppose. Having any luck with the HRC partner hunt?

M.Brane- Thanks M. Brane. Useful comments. The bass part though, will be replaced by a real bass. I like the sound of bass strings, especially in hard rock! Cheers.

dobro- "Daniel Lanois." Ya know, the more people I remind others of, the more I realize how little music I've heard in my life. That makes two in this thread. :) Another that I'll have to check out...thanks. I'm taking you comments about the intro into account on the remix. I still want that impact, but I don't want to crack skulls open with mid range. I haven't gone into the smoothening stage of this tune yet. Threads like this give a good head start. Thanks Paul!

Toki- Thanks Tokah (as we'd pronounce it here in Maine). I agree about the intro. Very sibilant...I may need to retrack that part. It's nice to hear someone likes the drums now and then though! :) Thank you.

Lt. Bob- You've got the sax gig fo' sho'. I'd kinda like to keep the guitar position. :) I could seriously put a band together of just guys like you on this site and feel pretty damn good about it. I'll be emailing you soon about Chrysalis and The Passing. No, I don't want you to retrack them with a kazoo.

fprod south-

I noticed the same thing in my co-worker's car today. You hit it on the head. They sound perfect for each other on my monitors, but once the lows and highs of the car systems get to it, they split up. Thanks a lot man. By the way, what is your first name? You've covered my music, I feel I have a right to know your name. :)

ashulman- Yeah, he is always in a bad mood. Though I think he smiled in the "Wall- Live in Berlin" show. But he might have just been laughing at Bryan Adams. :) Thanks for listening to the tune!

Pedullist- Tjarko, not irritated at all my friend. It's like someone else once said here on the bbs....I just wanna get to the guitars! But I did check out your link, and it looks very interesting, and maybe useful. I'll experiment with it. Email coming your way about the bass...

Ya, sorry. I posted a message above that I pulled it down. I've got what I need for comments for now. I've already made some huge improvements because of them. I'm going to put some real bass in there before I re-post it. Thanks for trying, man. Sorry!

ha! I am so burnt.. sometimes I type out responses in notepad before posting and I thought I responded to this.. I checked the thread today to find that I never did!! :o What an ass! :D I checked out 10 other songs yesterday too.. I wonder how many I actually responded to..

I see you took it down but I of course have it saved..

love------------------------I repeat-------------------> love that intro! I was really wanting it to go longer or a whole song of that.. I totally agree with mixmkr there.. as far as the bass, I thought the bass was excellent! maybe the overall mix could have been less bassy sounding, but I was into the bass line and the sound for the most part... I'm sure the remix will be better but the bass line didn't seem like the problem to me.. If there even is a problem.. Always lots to take in on a new Sluice song, but my first gut reaction was all about the intro.. Did you program or play the piano? The drums seem a little distant (whatever that means.) Great tune delivered again! I notice more with every listen.. Let me digest it for another day or two.. Why are there no stars on this thread?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I saw Iron Maiden, Dio, and Motorhead @ Jones Beach saturday night.. Awesome show! Great night for the beach too..

Well, dammit :o It's a good thing SOME of us go ahead and download a song 9 days before someone removes it, and 10 days before we review it ;)

Fade in... phaser/flanger voc... awesome weird...

LOVE! (wow... love hurts!!! The ears!! :D)

Once that part kicks in, something changed... mix got out of balance... but just a little bit... (will catch on listen #2)

Wow. That gtr chug... feedback... chug... feedback... what a palette... excellent layering... the theme to the Incredible Hulk plays... (1:53)

NIIIICE "ROAR" there... I have trouble making my gtr sounding like a guitar much less a "bear", like you do :D

This outro is kicking my ass... (the section right before 3:15, anyway)...

L#2:

Maybe too much mid in the bass? A general 1kHz (or thereabouts) hump when the chorus kicks in... probably the bass' fault... not too big... but noticeable...

Jungle sounds... maybe "Jaguar" instead of "Bear"?

"We can't see clear..." vocs a bit low there? (The quiet one... starting around 2:15)

2:58-3:19 = GOLDEN

What a F&#%in AWESOME outro.

L#3:

Have ya thought about panning that vocal lead... the phasey one... around and around like a drunken washing machine?? Agitator?

1:30-1:51 "They kick when you're kneeling..."... wow ... PLATI-NUMB... second favorite part, only to the 2:58-3:19 part... and of course the ass kicking we get in the OUTRO.

Ah dammit... gonna EMOTE here... urgghh...

Nice :)

Panic Attack

I Always look forward to your stuff.
But I cant find the song on this link ?

Help!

I am having a panic attack.

i finally get a minute to listen to some tunes (working from home today) and it's GONE!

i can empathize with not having access to an environment that exposes certain frequencies, or rather just not having a perfectly balanced environment. Then again, your car also might just have a bad resonance in that area as well. I wouldn't assume that your car is perfect. For example, in my car stereo I absolutely cannot listen to the latest White Stripes CD(I'm sure that's far from a reference cd though), however, on the home stereo it sounds great and in a friend's car it sounds great also.....he stole my cd by the way.

Just some thoughts to consider.

That White Stripes cd is great and an analog recording on old equipment. A rarity these days.

I was gonna listen and there it was.....GONE!!!!!

I bet it was cool from the looks of the other posts.

Tom;

I guess I'll havta check it out when ya get it back up. Didn't see it and kept reading the posts and saw where ya took it down.
