I hope this makes sense. If I pan all the instruments out to get a nice wide stereo image it sounds like my band members (imaginary since I do mostly MIDI stuff) are a lot farther apart from each other than the Neo Soul CDs I listen to. They usually sound closer together, more intimate, like they are playing in a small bar or something. My band always sound like they are on a stadium stage with the members spread out as far as they can get. I don't use a whole lot of reverb or anything. Any tips?

Thanks. I checked that out yesterday actually. The articles were a lot better than most of the ones I've read before.
I was hoping for some advice or starting points a lil more specific to my problem. I wonder if the guitar reverb is doing weird things. Is it important for the guitar's reverb to match the other instrument's reverb eventhough most guitarists use reverb effects units? That plus the room's reverb would make the guitar have more reverb than all the other instruments right?

Don't pan everything so wide. What you mentioned about reverb is something to consider. Sometimes using the same main reverb for all the instruments can help it sound a bit more realistic.
