Hey,

I am doign this new setup for my band!

And when doing smaller clubs i really hate it being so loud that the soudn engineer at the back of the club does not have to do shit, because the amps are already so loud.
Because the guitarists want to have THE sound, and they only have it if they have the tubes cranked up till THE MAX.
And i really think that running everything DI excpet for the drums offcourse coudl be itresting and very positive when it comes to doing the overall mix solely on what you hear form the PA!

What do you think?

And for that reason i started to look up this speaker simulator that is said to be very good.

So that i dont run my MArshall 6100 straight to the mixer. Althoguht it has direct in!
I woudl go through the speaker simulator and then to the mix in!
We would offcourse use in -ear monitoring!
We have 2 guitars, bass, synthy and drums!

Any opinions on the Palmer?

I have a PDI-03, its a great piece of gear. Not only does it allow me to crank my Mesa gear up to get the tubes burning but it adds to the overall tone. It's also very usefull for recording and playing at home where you can plug directly to a mixer or headphones etc. Great piece of gear, I got mine new for €345 from a German website... www.musikproductiv.de I think.

Are you set up for in-ear monitoring? I've done a bit of this, and it's not a simple task, nor is it cheap. To begin with, no two people are going to want the same mix, and to be most effective, some stereo panning is good. That means 8 custom mixes for 4 people. Then there's the wired/wireless question.

A better approach may to go in direct and then back out to conventional monitors.

Well how can it be so complicated!
If it were so complicaed i dont think a lot of people would be doing it!

My plan is:
You have the FOH mixer and the monitoring.
If you go from Stage to the Spliter and one line goes to the Monitoring and the other on to FOH you are setup good.
But then yu woudl need a guy to do the monitoring mixes, and if it is not your own guy, that does not knwo you, your sound, what you want it can get complicated!
So we ahve an engineer, one constant!
He has uses aa soundcraft spirit live desk with 6 aux sends/subgroups/submix!

He gets all the cables from the stage into the desk and sets the submixes, as he woudl do it for normal (speakers) monitoring he does it for each one in the band.
Like you said each one with its one mix!
BUt where do you see the problem?

I see only good things come out of it!
Well sure you need some time to get it right, but what are soudn checks for, ha?

But the way i see it, we woudl each want a separate mix. The dummers kick and snare, a touch of guitars, loops.
The bassist, vocal and the bass, some drums!
the singer, a lot of vocals, synth& guitar!
.....

Everyone has its own mix! And each has its own aux send!
And then there are a few options.

Liek this Shure P400 foe example!
4 sneds to 4 ins on the monitoring system!
And the wireless form the FOH to the receivers which we have on our belts!

Now do we start talking about good things with in-ear monitors?

-free place on the stage?
-no feedback
-quality of playing, personal taste of your mix you hear (e.g control of your
voice, your instrument)

the thign is i wnat for all the band memebers to have in-ear because we want to use click to the max!
YOu knwo like you dont have to lsiten to the drummer and his counting down on sticks, when to start a song!
Where you can be all on line, to the same source (click) and play very unison!
I dotn knwo but the idea puzzles me for soem time now!

I knwo it s expensive but agian what is soem extra money if you look a the result!
So i wont be buying Mesa Triple head just yet!

I had the idea to go DI in small stages. Using a speaker simulator liek the palmer yes!
I woudl use my marshall 6100, with balanced output! Into spekaer simulator and from there to the desk.
I know it is not quite like the sound of a 4x12 marshall cab, but i hear it gets pretty close!
So if you are not frustrated with wanting to have a tower of speakers behind you in a small bar, thatn that is a very good solution!

Do we start talkign abotu the positive sied?

-No leakege form the stage, so the sound engineer coudl do a mix based souly what he hears form the PA, and the drums from stage!

- Noise, and loudness! We all know how loud must you be if you are standing next to a marshall cab. You cant hear it, because it plays to your legs. You can lift it because you dont have the place for it!
And we knwo you have to turn it up good to start sounding good!

- Empty space on the stage, which gives you more space to move around!
How stupid doeas a band look if they are all squeezed in together on stage liek a can of sardines!

ANd for a bigger concert you can still use both maybe?
I still want to hear some more opinions abotu the soudn of th eemulator?
