Hi guys,

(Sorry about the last post - something bombed out...)

I am looking at doing a paintjob on a guitar (a cheap secondhand one).

Is there anything I should know, before even considering doing this.

If it is straightforward, what do I need to do to do it properly ? I know how to remove/re-attach all electrics and accessories (pickups, knobs etc.). What I am wanting to know about is the paintjob itself.
Preparation - what do I need to do ? I am not looking to take the neck off, so it's just basics like sanding/rubbing down the body.
Once I have painted what I want to, what do I spray on to protect it ? Anything specially for guitar bodies ?

Basically I'm just mucking around on a cheap guitar, but if it works out, there may be more for me to do...

Any ideas/tips ?

Cheers

Wally- Thats the site I was looking for, too. I think those guys have some good solutions.
If it's a bolt-on, do yourself a favor and go ahead and take off the neck.

Is it safe to take the neck off if it's a bolt on ?

Also, is the final clear coat just usual clear laquer ?
Does it finish with a hard enough coat ? I always thought it was some kind of resin that was used to get the protective coat...

Any guys out there in the UK that have done this sort of thing ? Any products you know of that are available in the UK for this sort of thing (paints, varnishes, polishes etc..)

Leedon, check out Halfords car paints.. im pretty sure they are of a similar nature to the stuff offered on that site although I would check the actual packaging for confirmation of the actual type of paint.

When I used to work for them years ago they had a massive range of colours available and also matt and gloss laquers too....
They can probly sort you out with suitable wet and dry sandpapers too.

if you want a "pro" looking guitar, follow the instructions on reranch's web site. They have a how to section that's really good!
