I just watched a Youtube Video on one tiny aspect of NI Komplete 8 (making a sound in Absynth 5) and it suddenly hit home just exactly how far I am in over my head. Between this, half a dozen virtual samplers, multiple soft synths, drum modelers, my Stupid 90's Hardware Synth Module + Separate Keyboard That I Can't Get To Record and Play MIDI For the Life of Me, Endless Updates, crashing computers, mics, effects, Pro Tools, my Fender Jazz Bass and changing the strings on my guitars, (and all of this revolving around a more than full time job), I think it will take the better part of a decade to produce anything at all; at least at the level that I would aspire to portend to understand any of this... :laughings:

Buy a Moog Voyager. There's a knob for every function, not a hidden drop-down menu.

If you need polyphony, buy more than one.:D

I hate the word Plethora
specially when it's capitalized ?

:D ;)

So what's the deal with the hardware module and synth that won't record or play MIDI?

What MIDI interface are you using? Are you on a PC or a Mac?

We should be able to get that part figured out. Which synth module and which keyboard?

Thanks for asking!

I've got a Roland U220 sound module that I want to use to record an original composition
(I used to have a U20, so I picked up this unit on ebay to get the sounds).

I use an M-Audio 25 key midi controller on a PC with Pro Tools 10.

I just can't quite figure out how to hook it up to do what I want (but I'm close).

I am able to connect the M-audio controller to the U220 via MIDI cables,
and USB from the controller to the DAW and get sounds out of U220 through the DAW using ASIO4all.

What I want to do is to record MIDI tracks in Pro Tools and have them trigger the U220 so I can do some editing (my keyboard skills are non-existant).

I figure I will need to connect the U220 somehow to the MIDI connections in my Axe FX II (it has MIDI in and out), set it as the Sound Engine,
get the M-Audio set up as a MIDI controller, create the right kind(s) of track(s), and record my parts.

The song I am working on needs two patches out of the U220 at the same time
(playing two different parts, using two different patches on two separate tracks).

I have been reading on the internet and plan on hitting the book on Pro Tools to get it figured out when I get a chance.

Any conceptual (or concrete, for that matter) advice is welcome. :)

Absynths fairly straightforward ;)...sign up for the Groove 3 tutorials....take the power back!

Relax, breathe in and out, have a fart or two......
Console yourself, my child, with the comforting knowledge that most of us were once in your shoes, but have passed them onto you, for you to become wise and knowledgable in the art of recording.
To become so, you must navigate your way out of the streams of confusion.......

Now climb !

I have a bunch of stuff I probably won't use on my old G4, but most of it was free, lol. I'm being a little more picky with the new mac.
Just start with simple stuff to get a feel for your rig--you don't need to write a symphony first thing.

I have Komplete 8 Ultimate. The quantity of stuff in there is immense. I only wanted Kontakt, but to get all the drum and piano libraries, it was kind of worth it (plus a bit more, of course!) to get the full whammy.

There is so much stuff in there, you kind of feel bad that you can't use it all, but you have to just use the bit you want right then. I only use Guitar Rig and Kontakt right now. I want to get into using synths a little more, but have no idea how to program them or find a preset somewhere that sounds like what I want.

In summary, I feel your pain, Sam, but it will abate once you get bored and start looking for your next purchase.

Massive is pretty straightforward but although fm8 is superb i rarely touch it

Komplete 8 is insane.

lol at getting bored and looking for my next purchase, how true!

Groove3 is a great suggestion, I have a couple already.

Thanks for the great advice you guys! :thumbs up:

I'm going to go back and hit the books.
