I am looking for a pair of good pre amps for overhead mikes. I think I will probably use a Joe Meek vc1Q for the snare. Also not sure what to get for the bass drum. I am using cubase with a delta 1010 and my mikes are sm57 for snare, audix D6 for bass drum and EVpl11 for overheads. I am willing to spend around $500 per pre amp, hopefully something with an EQ and compressor. How about the twinQ?

I use the Symetrix 528E

very clean signal, with compression and eq modules. Has phantom power, but was originally intended for vocal processing.

I often use a pair of AKG 451s thru an RNP or a pair of API 3124 channels for overheads.....

Would an outboard pre amp be better than a inboard pre?

If by "inboard" you mean pres built-in to a soundcard than I would have to say yes, all other things being equal.

Most of the overheads on my first CD were run through a twinQcs, using either Oktava MC012's or Studio Projects C-4's, and it worked very well. The twinQ also is consistently chosen for a variety of vocals.-Richie

Not sure what is meant by inboard so please forgive me for being a drummer. I do own a Mackie 1604 which does an O.K job but still does not compare to to results I was getting 20 years ago with a Teac reel to reel 4 track. Just trying to get some of that magic of anolog to mix with the magic of digital and thought that better pre amps might fatten up the sound. Maybey I need some tubes.

Agreed; but! What the hell does this mean? :D
Without considering anything else that affects the signal chain, IMO there is a significant difference in quality between on-board pres of small format mixers & soundcards, and dedicated outboard mic pres.

Gotcha. One of those common sense things that I take for granted I think. Thanks. ;)
