I was currious to see what people use THESE days for drum overhead mics.
Please tell us what mics and mic pres you use.

MXL603s in cardio mostly, I recently picked up some omni capsules for them and I'm really liking this arrangement too.

1 Kick-Beta 52A
2 Snare (i5 on top, SM57 on bottom)
2 603s over-head

I'll use Omni Condensers, Cardioid Condensers, and Figure 8 Ribbons depending on the sound I want for that particular song/recording.

I voted omni (QTC-1's) but I'm presuming when you say O/H you mean the kit', not just cymbals.

You presume right. :D

I am the one who choose Hypercardioid. (AKG C-418)

I am thinking of changing my OH, so I wanted to see what other people are doing to get and idea of what direction to go into. I was mainly thinking of going cardioid, omni, or get something that gives me the option of either.

I would like to capture the whole kit, but focusing on the cymbals.

Keep the poll going.

....

I like omni or cardioid, AKG C414 or Neumann KM184s, sometimes the Groove Tubes (now Sterling) GT57s. Pres are api 3124+ or Trident S20

That's interesting. I was thinking something tight' for the cymbals. :) That's where I need the upgrade - just a pair of old cheap AT' cards' right now.

Right now, a pair of omni condensers. MSH-1's. It's what I have... :D

Depends on what I what to hear. Right now I have a 4033 and 4040 overhead. Other mics I use are MSH1, 603 and CAD 1000 (I think)

Two LDCs; one cardioid, one figure 8, in an M-S configuration. ;)

Km84s (most of the time) or 451EBs (CK1) in XY or spaced, run through either a Demeter VTMP 2a or a Wunder PA4. More meat with the Demeter, more fidelity with the Wunder.

In the studio- Neumann KM184's into Avalon AD2022
Remote- Oktava MC012's or Studio Projects C-4's into Joemeek twinQ

I use a pair of JM-27's in either recorderman or ORTF. I am starting to like the ORTF as my ears are getting better. This pattern seems to work for me when I hear the drums mixed with everything else. The cymbals have more definition if that makes sense. I don't think it picks up the toms as well but that might be because I have them too high. I close mic the toms and bring those in for a little more meat.
