I did some searching and I just wanted to clarify some things I read. I saw that many people recommended the AKG 414's for a "tight" and "punchy" drum overhead sound. This is exactly the sound I am going for, some of my favorite recordings are done by Mark Trombino (Jimmy Eat World) and Ken Andrews (Year of the Rabbit, Failure). I plan to close mic the drums with mostly Sennheiser 421s and 441s.

My exact question is what other overhead would provide a similar tight and punchy sound for rock/emo like some of the bands listed above? Would a pair of SP B1's do the trick? I only ask because the AKGs are expensive and with so much debate over what capsule you get and new/old ones, I'd rather look for something that is known to be good no matter what year it was made.

Look for some Shure KSM 32s. I do tons of rock and such and they are my fave OH mics at any price.

AKG C451's sound nice too, they are small diaphragm condensors.

I like the KSM44's..But you could get good results with the ones mentioned by Cloneboy and Ronan also..The most Important thing is the tuneing of the drums and cymbal selection..also a good room helps. :)

C451's are really really really really bright. I wouldn't recommend them unless you know what you're getting into.

The B1's are great OH mics. So are Oktava Mk319's. Red5 Audio RV8's are some of the best and most inexpensive. Audio-Technica AT4040's. Shure KSM 32's.

Any of those - and they're all LDC's - are going to do a good job.

BTW, guinsu, I've never seen AKG 414's described as tight and punchy. "Tight" and "punchy" is a description often used for API mic pres.

More info here on using many of those mics I listed.

Dot, so far, I've heard great things about the bass drum and overhead mics with the Red5 mic packages, but what about the tom/snare mics? Are they any good?

The Studio Projects C4s have gotten a lot of praise. I just ordered a set today, and I can't wait to get them in!
