Ninja kick the dam rabbit
ok, well im looking for some oh mics. ive been looking at the mxl603s or the mxl993 i know i know..china made mics rule right? lol ne way. i was also looking at the Audix SCX One and the Shure KSM141. what will sound best? are any of them to harsh or grity on the top end? are there any other that would blow this list away without costing much more than 800 for the pair? any help would mean lot to me. this isn't something that i can test at my local music store. so any input would be great.

i currently use the Audix d6 on my kick, D2's and D4 on the toms, 57 on the snare top i5 on the bottom. and an Apex LDC as a room mic.
this is the kit im micing.(acrylic) only without the leftside little drums. and a Maple snare.

heres what i got going for me so far. i play the kit, so you can hear a sound sample... sounds ok (i think) any tips?

oh and p.s. i didn't invert the phase on the bottom snare mic. i know, stupid slip up. sorry guys. just pitcher...a less thin sounding snare haha

Cascade Fathead II ribbon mics...my current favorite for drum OH...though I'm looking forward to trying out my new group buy 1200's as well.

^ what Frank said. or my personal favorite, SM81's. which at $350 a piece, are within your budget also.

btw, interesting setup you got there.... it's all very, uh, flat....

hahaha thanks, i laughed pretty hard when i read that lol. ya ive always played pretty flat. just habbit, feels nice so i do it haha.
p.s thanks guys, ill check that out

I tend to lean towards the Oktava MK-012 (with or without Michael Joly's mods).

If you're going to spend KSM141 money, I'd forget about all the cheaper options, and look at mics in its price bracket; AT, Peluso, etc. The KSM141 is a seriously good mic.

ya i know what you mean 100%. but at the same time if i can get a really nice sound from something much less costly, that would be best. rent comes first...usually lol

if your budget is 800 then why not look around for a couple of used AT4050s. i have a pair and i'll say that they sound great on overhead...and just about everything else that i've tried them on.

and there's always the Rode NT5 which i also have and does a very nice job as well.

If you decide to spend the $$, SM81's would be great. It's a proven workhorse mic. Good on other things as well.

thanks for the tips guys, im actually looking into the nt5, i hear good things and the price is a bit less heavy lol

THANK YOU!!!! haha ive been looking hi and low for a sample clip of teh nt5's as overheads lol. love the cymbal sound you have , very smooth yet crisp. it cuts well with out being to in-your-face. what cymbals did you use? and what mic placement? if you don't mind me asking

remember. that clip has a bit of room mic in there as well.

the nt5s are a in XY pointing down at the set. tthe room mics are 5 feet out or so about knee high. the cymbals are Zildjian A Custom and the drums themselves are Tama Granstars.

Here's what I'd do: find all the studios in your area via Google and ask them which OV's they have. Ask to rent any that are within your price range on an off day for the studio. Small/mid studios are often happy to rent for $20ish with some kind of collateral. Especially right now - economy and holiday :(

This way you hear the mics with your pre's on your kit in your room before commiting to a purchase.

Sounds like a lot of work but it's actually pretty fun assuming you have a few local studios that are game. I did this recently with a vocal mic and it kept me from making a bad decision.
