I have around a $250-$300 budget to buy some overhead mics and a hi-hat mic. I can get a used matched pair of MC012 for $250 and wait a few months for a hi-hat mic .Is that a good deal?
What could I use for Hi-mic?
thanks

I don't record drums myself, but I don't think that many people mic the hat individually. Personally, if I was going to mic drums, I'd keep it simple. I'd use four mics. 2 overheads, snare and kick.

I agree. I mic with two MC-012's overhead, one on the bass drum, and one on the snare drum. I do also usually mic the upper toms with one mic, and the floor Tom with another, but in reallity, the MC-012's setup in an X pattern, pick up all of the cymbals, including Hi Hat, plus the Toms fine on their own.

The 012's are decent overheads for sure. I do a lot of drum recording and I can count on one hand the times I've miked a hi hat.

I don't do much drum mic'ing nowadays... but I always mic the HH, in most cases... I guess that is why there is chocolate and vanilla. You have to watch out for the air swoooosh though...

I guess I just like sizzly symbalzzz

oh...and I used a small dia. condensor...your choice...

Ya know Mix, I think it's a function of the kits I get to record. For the most part the cymbals are really ment for live use. They're usually very thick to cut thru in a live situation which seems to be all over tones and less of the fundamental. They don't splash like they should for recording.

As far as HH mics, I've got a Rode NT-3. While I haven't used it on HH's, there are several demo recordings on the Rode website which feature this mic on the hats. I thought it sounded pretty good. Worth taking a look at. Especially for ~$100 on ebay (if you hold out long enough).

Thanks for all the usefull info people. Well I just came home with a pair of MC012's that I got for $180. I'm going to try them out a bit. BUt I have a question about phantom power. I have a mackie 1402 vlz and when I turn on the phantom power all 6 of the mic inputs get powered. If I have my akg D112 and SM57 plugged in with the phantom switch on will it harm my 2 dynamic mics in any way? If so how do I work around this problem?
thanks again

Yeah, dynamic mics explode when exposed to phantom power.

Just kidding, it doesnt do a thing to dynamics.

hahahahaha. Thanks darrin. Know I need to figure out how to mic this crappy kit. I dont know very much about mic technique. Anybody have any suggestions on how to place the overheads? I'll go expirament and try to keep my mics from exploding now. thanks.

Smacks darrin in the side of the head. No it won't hurt the dynamic mics. Just don't set the kit up in a puddle of water.:D

mix i to like to have the sizzle on the hats. So i will checking out the NT3 like mgraffeo suggested.

any suggestions on a hi-hat mike for around $100-$150 price range?

I use a MC012 for hihat. It's the best mic I've ever heard for this purpose. I use a pair of ADK A51's as overheads together with it.

thanks hrn. I suppose I could go get another MC012 for the hi-hat. They sound pretty good as overheads, they made me re-realize how crappy my drums sound. Any more suggestions?
