My tech-man graciously sent me this email:
In a true balanced system, pin 2 or 3 can be hot. As a matter of fact, it took years to reach a standard on this. Some gear said pin 3 hot and others would say pin 2. It even got to the point that some parts of the country said pin 3 and others would say pin 2. In NYC, for years it was standard practice to have pin 3 hot at all the big studios and out in Los Angeles it was pin 2. What made everything work was as long as you didn't reverse anything in your signal chain everything worked fine. That was until you started adapting all the unbalanced stuff that started appearing on the semipro market and things got weird. Either got sound or no sound and sometimes just plain distortion. So, they made pin 2 the hot standard, but life goes on....and things still get messed up. When I'm settting up gear to be tested, I set it up balanced and have no problems and for unbalanced I go for pin 2 hot, unless it doesn't work. It is very confusing if you don't deal with this on a day to day basis. So, it should work fine. If by chance it doesn't, I'll walk you thru the steps on correcting the problem.
