Otari MX-5050 8-Track Almost Done!

I found this machine at the Salvation Army for $50 a few years ago, but I only recently had the time to get it going. I started on a Fostex X-26 in (IIRC) 1990 then moved to an R8 then a TSR-8. When I was at Berklee the Otari decks were everywhere, but I could never afford one.

I'm really excited to finish this one up. It was blowing fuses when I bought it, but it's running good now. I have new rollers for it and need to calibrate and align it. I may end up selling it because I'm not sure how much I'll use it, but it's still a cool piece to have in my studio!

That's awesome. I always wanted one of those, but also couldn't afford one. I bought a TSR-8 and had a lot of fun with that for a few years. The Fostex R16 was a cool unit too, and recorded some demos at a local short lived studio in the early 90's.

Where does one source tape these days? I remember back in the day a place in Ottawa (Canada) where you could buy any type and size of tape you could imagine, like buying a loaf of bread these days.

You can buy tape from Vintage King. Amazon sells it as well. It used to be cheaper, but I'm not planning on relying on the machine for all my recordings.

The good thing about the Otari is it's easy to work on and parts are available (and they don't break that often). The Tascam machines can be tough to fix/find parts for. I liked my TSR-8 once I shut the DBX off and bought outboard NR. With the DBX I liked a BF ADAT better.
