Which is to be prefered, Windows 2000 or Windows XP?

Everybody tells me XP is optimized for multimedia (and hence sound and music), but I think Windows 2000 is both faster and more reliable than XP.

Suggestions?

I would say that WinXP is faster and more reliable than Win2000. No doubt about it...

I agree with moskus. So long as you can get XP drivers for all your hardware, XP would be preferred (although there is nothing wrong with 2000 either).

You'll probably want to turn off all of XP's "bells and whistles" though if you are using this strictly as a DAW.

I'm about to receive a new pc with XP, and SONAR 2XL, and begin putting it all together. How do you 'turn off all those bells and whistles', if you would be so kind. Chris

Here's something to start with.
http://www.musicxp.net/

I think moskus has some links to optimization sites as well (where is he when you need him? :) )

Also you want to be sure you have nothing running that will draw resources from the recording program - e.g., task schedulers, virus programs, etc.)

Simulataneous post, Jeff. At least we sent him to the same place. :)

Your memory is quite good, Dachay. I had some optimization-links, but then my PC was stolen...

But I've found some new ones:
A pdf from Tascam about Win2000/WinXP optimization, click here
A page that tells you which WinXP services you can turn of, click here
A general WinXP-tweaking page can be found here
A general Windows-tweaking page can be found here
And if you're looking for tweak-tools, go here

And with WinXP you don't need to disable ACPI if you don't want to (IMO). WinXP handles ACPI way better than Win2000, but some may still have problems with it (depending on your hardware). If you want to learn about ACPI and how to disable it, click here or here.
