Just recently i purchased a TASCAM 424 (the original beige one) off of ebay, but didn't receive the owners manual. My question is, how do I mix 4 recorded tracks down to 2 tracks so i can mix the recording to a two track cassette deck? I have the owners manual for the 424 MKIII but the controls on the one are very different from the original, and turned out to be of little help. In fact the method listed in the MKIII resulted in the erasing of some of my recording!

so heres what i have:
-all 4 tracks have recordings on them

what i want to do is mix tracks 1 and 3 down to track 1 (left), and 2 and 4 down to 2 (right). So, i can mix the whole thing down to a regular 2 track cassette deck.

If no one has any answers i'd like to know where i can get the owners manual without having to pay TASCAM for the photocopy.

Really briefly, here's how to do it-

Set your source switches on each channel strip to the middle "tape" position

Make sure the switch on the back is set to "line out"

RCA out from tascam to input of mixdown deck

mix levels, eq, pan tracks to taste

Mixdown deck in record ready, play tascam and set a recording level using your mixdown deck's meters and tascam master fader

Rewind, Record on mixdown, play on tascam and you're golden

thanks! it turns out my only problem was the tape/line out switch. Oh man do i feel stupid.

The process I explained is mixing down to cassette. There's no need for a step in between. You use the mixer of the tascam to send out a stereo signal comprised of all 4 tracks to be captured on the mixdown (final) cassette. Again check the switch in the rear of the tascam to make sure its set to "Line out". When finished, the tape in your regular cassette deck will be your mixdown that you can play in your car or home stereo, I promise.

I think you were trying to bounce, in which case you need an open track to record to. This is another thing entirely, so lets ignore it for now. The mixdown process does not involve using the record function on your tascam (that's where your stuff went last time). You might consider mixing down this way: -Mixing- refers to playing with your levels, eq's, and pans. The -down- part refers to to the fact that it is going to a regular cassette. I hope I'm helping and not confusing.
