I've said it before . . . never confuse bending a note with expressing an emotion.

She has the Santana playbook down fairly well, minus his signature accidentals . . . but I'd rather listen to the original. With the original hair color, preferably. And if you ain't got hair anymore, a hat will do.

Chicks? Guitars? What the hell would they know?

Emily sadly no longer with us.

Of course if you like you blues a little more contemporary with a pretty face theres always!!

Ana.

but I'm just old I guess. Then for us old guys anything from the Grandmother of rock will do. :D

Bonnie

For me those other gals got a bit more dues to pay....

Cool links, muttley!

Best thread this month!

I saw Bonnie play live a few years ago. Truly awesome!

OK, I get it. I can play along & be really blokey too.
My 1st impression of the clip? I didn't have the sound up but I took one look & shouted at her, " Hey babe, show us your tone!"

To be honest I don't see her as particularly attractive - not even the guitar.

Yeh, she's great. I saw her a few years back in London. Little feat were in town and did the whole of the secound set backing her, plus Paul Brady got up and did a few songs with her. Add to that the support was Bela Fleck. A memorable night.

I am still trying to figure out why, there are not more female lead guitarist and why, most go for the acoustic or the bass, most of the time instead of the lead? Is it just that most girls, just aren't interested in it...or that they are pretty much led to believe they can't/shouldn't be do it ...and this takes it's toll on mindset. But yet, when a chic does decide to do it, her playing apparently lacks compared to the male player...why? Lack of emotion?.. ability..? fear..? discipline..? Dexterity..? If this is the case, then what is the explanation for chic violinist and pianist...etc..? I wanna know!!

I've thought about this some, actually. Probably all wrong, but...

There are 3 reason to jump out and be a flashy guitar player:

1) It comes naturally
2) You can make some money at it
3) You think it'll make you more attractive to the gender of your preference.

3 really only applies to guys. To get much attention a girl guitarist has to be BOTH good and cute. So if she's cute already picking up a guitar is just inviting criticism. If she's not cute then playing a wicked guitar is probably going to make her more threatening instead of more attractive. Stupid, but that seems to be the case.

So- why would she even start? Unless it came naturally? So the world is full of us half assed guitar playing guys "shredding" away in our bedroom "recording studios" half hoping (but not really admitting it even to ourselves) that we look kinda cute with the guitar on. Chances are that a few of us actually are gifted, talented and/or hard working enough to become phenomenal guitarists.

Since that same motivation to start playing guitar doesn't exist in the same way for young women... few pick up the lead guitar, fewer discover that they are gifted at it = fewer phenomenal lady guitarists.

Opera, piano, songwriting, and the like don't have the quite same thing going.

It may also be that guys are just used to being criticized. Its a way of life. You either learn to shrug it off (or pretend to shrug it off) and keep going. I don't think lady guitar players are criticized any LESS than guy players- its just more noticeable because guys usually aren't criticising girls that way for other things that they do (except maybe driving. ;))

My $.02.

Yeh so she's a technically proficient guitarist...

But it sounded to me like she was just playing the same riffs & ideas over and over again...and could she try any harder to have a Santana tone?i mean, i know she's playing a PRS and all...but surely you can get other tones than Santana's outta those guits..

How many lead guitarists does it take to screw in a light bulb?

13. 1 to actually do it and 12 to sit around and say "That sucked! I totally could have done that better. No tone! No technique! Sloppy phrasing! I should be on that stage and not that looser!"

Sums this thread up entirely :p

Perhaps she just plays the way she does and sounds the way she does because she enjoys it? Perhaps she really doesn't give a fuck what anyone else thinks?

I sit at home and shred, and 9 times out of 10, there is no one else around. So there ain't no impressing anyone there. I do it because it's fun.

That clip was from NAMM, no? Presumably she was getting paid to play. Nothing wrong with making money, but being a pro and caring what people think generally go hand in hand, that is if you want to make money year after year.

jeolous much

Come on, She's young. in 5-10 years (ignoring you people) she'll smoke the hell out of all of you, if she doesn't already. she's off to a great start, plays cleanly and accurately. and that was not all pentatonic licks, plenty of major scale runs too. I don't know how old she is but I'm guessing -20yo. how many of you can say you played that well at her age? and she's probably better than her half-assed teacher, obviously she's cloned by a local music store wash-out, using all those basic phrases, and with those PRS's she has money to.

It sounded like she just jumped on stage and jammed over a song she never heard before, played it pretty safe but nearly flawless.

Your first problem is believing that the purpose of music is to "smoke" other people. Did Andres Segovia "smoke" Jimi Hendrix? Grow up.

The question is, in the style of music she plays, does she express a musical idea that is unique and compelling? That alone will determine whether or not anybody knows her name in five to ten years.

yes!! easily Vivaldi, Bach, Grieg and esp. Itzhak Perlman on violin (he'd tear Jimi a new one). don't assume you know anything about what I believe. and I'm quite grown up.

Her name seems to be pretty well known already!!!, but what does that have to do with whether or not she can smoke you now, or in 5-10 years. even if she sits in a room alone it does not matter, and yes, this girl is looking to shred, she will smoke in time, I think you need to grow up some.

Enough trash talk. Why don't you head on down to the MP3 Clinic and start a RUMBLE! :p

Warning: the last RUMBLE! I start was the Bass Tapping RUMBLE!, and it got ugly real fast :D

PS Grieg sucked :p

Your on!! what was your last one? the wanking or the head cutting? I used to have a no posting rule, I wanted to get in on that.

Edit: oh, you said the bass rumble, I missed that one

Wanking and head cutting? Darn, I missed those myself :( I do like a good RUMBLE!

With any luck, a git-slinger named XLR will show up, and own everybody's ass here . . . Orianthi included, then this thread may end

You got a backing track? If not I can do one, but I don't have anything canned, so it'll take me a little while :o

Re: the bass tapping RUMBLE!, that was actually disappointment, because it started in a thread here, there was some monster god of bass dude here, and I said there was no musical purpose for bass tapping, and he disagreed. So I started a RUMBLE!, and much to my surprise, I found a musical use for bass tapping (the rules allowed harmonics and chords too, just no regular plucked notes).

But the dude never posted an entry himself . . . I don't think he posts anymore either

So I guess I . . . lost
