I am still trying to figure out why, there are not more female lead guitarist and why, most go for the acoustic or the bass, most of the time instead of the lead? Is it just that most girls, just aren't interested in it...or that they are pretty much led to believe they can't/shouldn't be do it ...and this takes it's toll on mindset. But yet, when a chic does decide to do it, her playing apparently lacks compared to the male player...why? Lack of emotion?.. ability..? fear..? discipline..? Dexterity..? If this is the case, then what is the explanation for chic violinist and pianist...etc..? I wanna know!!
I've thought about this some, actually. Probably all wrong, but...
There are 3 reason to jump out and be a flashy guitar player:
1) It comes naturally
2) You can make some money at it
3) You think it'll make you more attractive to the gender of your preference.
3 really only applies to guys. To get much attention a girl guitarist has to be BOTH good and cute. So if she's cute already picking up a guitar is just inviting criticism. If she's not cute then playing a wicked guitar is probably going to make her more threatening instead of more attractive. Stupid, but that seems to be the case.
So- why would she even start? Unless it came naturally? So the world is full of us half assed guitar playing guys "shredding" away in our bedroom "recording studios" half hoping (but not really admitting it even to ourselves) that we look kinda cute with the guitar on. Chances are that a few of us actually are gifted, talented and/or hard working enough to become phenomenal guitarists.
Since that same motivation to start playing guitar doesn't exist in the same way for young women... few pick up the lead guitar, fewer discover that they are gifted at it = fewer phenomenal lady guitarists.
Opera, piano, songwriting, and the like don't have the quite same thing going.
It may also be that guys are just used to being criticized. Its a way of life. You either learn to shrug it off (or pretend to shrug it off) and keep going. I don't think lady guitar players are criticized any LESS than guy players- its just more noticeable because guys usually aren't criticising girls that way for other things that they do (except maybe driving.
