I posted this in reaper's forum as well, but I figured I might as well throw it on here to see if I could get any bites. As the title says, I'm recording on an ibook g4. its a late 2004 model with 1.25 gig ram, 1.33 GHz processor, and tiger 10.4.11. I've been able to get recordings done decently, but it gets choppy on playback, making any sort of mixing pretty much impossible. My band has no drummer, so we're creating our own virtual drum tracks and it barely plays at all, like a cd skipping. If I render the track, I can play it back no problem, but in Reaper it kills. We also had some freezing while trying to lay down a scratch track. we would stop playing, but when the computer caught up, it looked like it had kept recording, just nothing coming back through the headphones. My interface is a MOTU 8pre if that helps at all. Any help would be much appreciated!

Tony - usually, you're going to want to give it at least 24 hours here before you come looking for answers - we're a helpful bunch, but especially over the weekends this place just isn't that busy.

Off the top of my head, check your buffer settings. If you're not pre-buffering very much of your tracks, you could be running into problems there. Also, are you recording and playing back through the same card? I'd gotten this sorted out before I switched to Reaper, but when I first got my first external interface, I was having problems because I was recording through my interface, but monitoring through my internal card, and my computer didn't like that much.

the motu takes care of both the recording and playback, except when I was creating the drums. I figured it wouldn't make sense to hook everything up just to plug my headphones in. I don't have my mac in front of me right now, but I'll check the buffer settings this evening. What would be an acceptable range? I don't mean to be pushy or anything, I'm still new at this and feel like I'm catching on conceptually to much of what's going on. I just need a few pointers here and there and I get over zealous at times...:D I do appreciate the help that I've gotten here and other forums immensely.

It probably varies widely, based on your gear.

Are you8 doing ASIO monitoring? What bitrate are you recording in?

everything is set to default, I don't have my mac in front of me right now and I can't remember what the bitrate is set to. the monitoring is ASIO, using the 8pre as my sound card. except for last night when I was using the computer's soundcard while I was setting up the drum track. I converted the file to mp3 and had no problem on playback, outside of the quality of playing of course!
