What are your opinions on ast / ust pick-ups for recording or is everyone still deferring to microphones and using there acoustic guitar pick-ups for live work...

Thanks this looks like a great forum and I look forward to getting more involved

Here are the answers you will get in many shapes and colours. Some will say they only use the mic while some will say they mix the two. So you direct the pickups in and then mix the mic to taste. Mostly you will hear that just pickups dont cut it. Id say - do both mic and pickup if you can and mix um - if not - take the better of the two. I personally just use mics.

I completely agree with that but I am trying to figure out how deep most people are going at home to record and if they were to use a mix of an under saddle pick-up and microphone what they would use and why.. Just trying to keep up with the latest technologies and trying to offer it to our customers or players.. So I am really wanting to know.. Do we install pick-ups for home recording at the factory level and or what brand do you think and why? or should we just offer the guitar with out.. But that being said the process for installing a pick up is not hard for us at the factory level and has in fact helped the sale of our guitars..So I do think people want the UST installed but wanting to know more..

Thanks for your time

My opinion is an acoustic guitar needs to be miked only. Thos piezos and other "acoustic" pickups sound really bad. Acoustic should have the sound of the room in the recording (that is why it is an acoustic insrument).

For mangling the sound (aka: the Beatles), anything goes.

As a matter of personal preference, I despise pick ups in acoustic guitars. They're great for playing live but that plinky Ovation sound makes me violent.
