Hey,

I'm planning on buying a small (4-10) track mixer for my currently minimal home computer recording setup. I do a lot of heavy metal guitar stuff, and I record drums and bass too. I've heard that mixers with built in preamps are good, although I know very little about what a preamp actually is. Can you buy them seperately and put them into your rig?

Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks.

the short:
preamps = power your mics/make them work. haha.

good preamps are possible on mixers, if it's a good mixer. aka, behringer preamps work fine - but dont sound nearly as good as something like a decent Soundcraft board...or the middle of the road: mackie there is a noticable difference too

Check out the Yamaha MG range.
They start with the MG10/2 - it has 4 preamps, costs $99
