Messing around with mic placement and reverb effects. Trying to simulate a realistic room sound. Something kind of subtle but still noticeable (and yet, still realistic sounding :p).

Can you tell me how the guitar sounds in this? And if the reverb sounds realistic or not? Little too much? (A lot?)

Not enough?

Is the guitar too bassy?

It's just a short sample (please excuse the sloppy playing ;)):

Relatively, its sounds real in a room with weird reverb, sorry thats all i have to describe it.
Sounds good though, where was the mic placed?
Edit couldn't comment on bass due to small speakers (obviously doesn't apply to real sounding)

Weird reverb?

The mic was placed about 4 inches away from where the neck meets the body, pointed slightly away from the sound hole.

Any suggestions as far as reverb goes? What sounds weird about it? Unnatural? Is there too much of it?

The guitar has a tad too much low-mid in it IMHO. If you took a little bit off the reverb, and timed the decay to the tempo, I think you'll be pretty close. Maybe try rolling off a bit of the highs in the verb as well?

edit - it's not too bad as is though.......

Thanks, NL.

I used the Waves Reverb on this one and it has parameters for decay, time, and reverb EQ, so I'm going to try what you suggested and post another clip. :)

How's this?

Ok, tell me if this one is better (or worse).

Seems like the more time I spend/worry about the settings the worse it turns out. I used to just slap a reverb on there and spend about 30 seconds with the settings and people would ask me where I recorded it like they thought it was a real room.

I listened back to the first one again and I think I understand what fishkarma meant by 'weird reverb'. :o

Lovely guitar tone, and nice, crisp playing and feel.

The only time it sounds a bit odd is the very beginning, where you tap the guitar once and you get the short breath of the reverb - that sounds distracting, otherwise either sounds OK to me.

For this kind fluid arpeggiated playing, I'd be tempted to try a longer reverb tail rather than the very short one you are using, but that's just the sound I've got in my head.

All that said, I'd be well pleased with the sound you have already.

I like the second one better.

Are you setting the decay by the tempo?

Thanks robin watson. :) I was imagining a longer decay time/reverb tail also for a bigger sounding room, but that sounded kind of unnatural.

NL5 - I just moved the decay fader until it sounded right. Not really sure how to set it by tempo. The decay value is just a number on the plugin, not sure what that number means.

There's "Linear" when moved all the way to the top, and from that point it goes from 3.49 to 0.

I attached a screenshot of the settings I used (on the 2nd clip).

Instead of having to refer to a chart all the time, it's easier for me just to remember the formula:

60,000 / BPM = Length of a ¼ note in ms.
