Opinions on recording, in terms of boxyness and sibilence

Right this is an attempt at recording an audiobook using a Shure Sm7b FetHead hooked up to a portable recorder.

The recording was done in a untreated room, some filtering to get rid of low level hum has been done.

Does this feel a little to boxy or sibilant, any opinions would be helpful.

Didn't sound too sibilant to me, or boxy, but I'm listening on small headphones via a laptop...

Did feel like wiping my ears after "Ffffffforce of will" though...

It was recorded relatively close to the mic, could that be the reason for the slight harshness.

I don't hear sibilance, though your mouth noises are picked up quite clear. No offense, but I would make sure to hydrate before recording and maybe back off the mic a bit. Are you using one of the foam screens that came with the sm7b or a pop filter? You may try different combinations of them and find the sweet spot for your voice.

Which by the way, is quite soothing if it didn't have the poppy lip smack thing going on. lol! I am just kidding. It doesn't sound bad. Just the pops there tend to take away from the context. Some compression on those frequencies could help with that also, but getting it right at the source would be most ideal.

I didn't feel it to be 'boxy' though some eq cut could be of use in the 100-250 Hz range off the top of my head. This will change with distance from mic however.

I look forward to hearing another clip from your audiobook. :) Read me a story please! :)

Haha! Remember I did that children's audio book and hardly anyone gave useful comments.
They just wanted to hear the next instalment! :laughings:

Interestingly, I used an SM7b and really struggled against mouth noises with the guy providing character voices.
I narrated the thing with the same mic and didn't have any problems at all.

I do! lol!

Some people just pop and click the lips and back of the throat. Not much to do there but find a way to remedy.
