opinion on older exports?

hi all,

I am about to buy a drumset. I haven't played in a few years, but I want something that I can record with, and tour with. I found an old gretsch roundbadge set with a 24" kick on ebay but lost the auction...oh well. I have a pretty good offer for an 80's pearl export with a 22" kick. My old kit was an export and I didn't think it was very good. This one is a bit older and I was just wondering some opinions. I know in the studio you can do a lot with tuning and placement, but I generally like to play well-made instruments...they're more enjoyable to play and sound better with less "work". Any thoughts are much appreciated. Thanks!!
 
export=more work than worth...............I'd go for an expensive pearl or nothing (I'm not a pearl fan)

I use remo masteredge drums myself but would love to get my hands on an old gretsch or ludwig

the other kit I play is a premier genista

but of them all a gretsch is the holy grail IMO
 
You should check the old Mapex Mars Pro... much better than Export, i think.
All maple shells and rims on toms and bass drums.
A nice drumkit for sure...
 
yeah i know (about the gretsch)...I didn't want to bid too high cuz you never really know with vintage stuff, especially drums. i can't seem to find a new gretsch kit with a 22" or larger kick.... you think there is a custom shop that could make a clone for less than a grand?
 
Falken, I'm no fan of Pearl either -- if you were not happy with your old Exports, than I don't suggest getting another. Most Gretsch sets I've heard, on the other hand, sound great.

I say keep looking in the paper, yard sales, (ebay, of course) and sites like craigslist.org -- You're bound to find a good used set for a decent price.

I don't have a real problem with Exports, I play on a set. Of course, the only stock thing on the kit is the shells!!! But there are better sounding and more reliable drums out there for not much more dough!
 
it all comes down to money spent I suppose

if I had a grand to spend I would buy a mapex saturn pro albeit it only has a 22" kick but as a good working kit it was awesome

that was the kit that was on display & I would've had it there & then but the need to eat is more important in the face of 4 different kits already under one roof. Having said that Falken you could probably order a kit of choice from mapex but I don't have a clue what the prices would be, I stopped looking as I always felt sick :p

I jammed with this guy a few times that had a mapex. that was the loudest drumset I have ever heard.

I tend to be a fan of Pearl's upper lines, but you're right - if he didn't like the old Exports - why put himself through that?
Me personally - I wouldn't have a problem using the exports - but you have to keep in mind that I trigger the entire drumkit, so the drums themselves are really just an electric drumset for me.

Exercise patience too. I was about to blow money on cheap drums, and for a little over 2K got a 9pc Mapex Saturn w/ Gibralter rack and 2 brand new Pearl snares.

I had an export (first year they went to the long 1 pc lugs). They only sounded good onstage, and with the bottom heads off. Personally I loved my World series Pearls, but they're low end stuff are pretty lame.

If you want to tour, get something new so you can get spare parts easily and quickly and cheaply.

The exports have great hardware (my favourite), but in the same league, the Sonor Force 2005 are completely birch kits, and have a greater sound.

The low end Tamas seem to suck balls!

Those are just my opinions though...

Importantly though, make sure take into account ease of setting up, and ease of finding replacement parts. Don't just go for sound.
