Only half the keyboard working.

I'm currently taking a look at a Techniques SX-PX222 for a friend of mine. It powers up okay and all the outputs works fine but fore some reason only the left side of the 88 note keyboard is working up to about the 32 note while the rest do nothing. I've ruled out any improper mode setting as the keyboard functions are very minimal on this unit and have no options for anything like dual L&R sounds or split points so it doesnt seem to be a settings issue that I can tell.

I've heard of individual note triggers sometimes going bad on a keyboard but dont know if its common for large sections at time to go out together like that. I was thinking of hooking it up MIDI as a slave controller for another keyboard to see if the problems persists but other than that I'm at a loss. Any other suggestions on troubleshooting it further or repairing it?

:D Yo NRS [non-relative-syndrom?]

You can use the "working" half of that synth to record certain parts and then use another synth for the "other" half of the synth that only plays half of a synth. Will give you the opportunity to use different sounds and ascend/descend ala Ravel for some dramatic effects.

Or, you could have the synth repaired.

Green Hornet

Can you hook up another MIDI instrument to it, or a MIDI sequencer (perhaps something like Cubase), and see if you can trigger the other notes from the external sources? This might help you figure out whether it's the keyboard itself that's gone wild or the sound engine.

did you not get the responce over at keyboard mag site... you most likely have a bad wiring harness either between the 2 sub boards (one for each end of the keydeck) or between the upper end board and the main board.... have you torn it down and looked yet??? could be as simple as cleaning jizz off the wiring harness...

I think the first test would be hooking it up to another synth. See if you can trigger all the sounds on it (i would image you can) and then see if it will atleast trigger midi on another device.

If both those work, you could atleast have a controller and a soundmodule if you have multiple boards or plan to. If it does infact work for one or both, atleast you have something usuable with no repair cost.

If you friend is cool about you ripping it apart, do that as well. And see if their is anything obvious or maybe it just needs cleaning. I wouldn't know what to look for.

The obvious, send it out for repair. Just make sure it's worth the money over something else interms of what you buy it for vs repair costs.
