I want to record the word "Hoora" !

You know....like the Navy or Marines would say.
Problem would be, I want it to sound full as if an entire squadron is "Yelling" it.

Anyone have any tips?

It is for a song I wrote for our Men and Women serving in the Navy.

Record it a bunch of times (half dozen should be enough) and then mix them together with a multitracker program. Add more copies to taste, each with some slight timing differences.

what drstawl said.
You can even try a delay line, a little chorus, do some pitch shifting or maybe even somo tremolo, and sending them to different kinds of reverbs so it seems like they come from different places.

It reminds me of a no-fi recording I did a few years ago.
A couple we knew just got married so a friend (guitar) and I (bass) recorded a punkish 30 second version of the wedding march.
We had one mic so each of us yelled, burped, and moaned a bunch of tracks full with the melody, mixed it down and it was like a bar full of drunk people cheering for the newlyweds.

Okay, The result may not have been something we should be proud of from an sound engineering point of view, it was quite a succes amongst our friends :)

Well, while reading it back it occurs to me that this story probably won't help you much. But it kicked your question back up! ;)

Here's what I can offer

Have a pizza party with 20 of your buddies. Since they're all there anyway, tell them you need them for a project you're working on. Throw up a mic and have them yell "hoora" 5 or 6 times.

Then later you can stack them all up. This is the only way you will get anything convincing, IMO. You can try layering, chorusing, time shifting and reverbing 7 ways 'til Sunday and it still won't sound the same as have 20 different guys shouting, each with a dfferent voice, a different tone, a different pitch.

Real is always better.

Thank you everyone!

Interesting suggestions all of them !

Man....must be nice to be Aaron...who can afford to buy pizza for your friends after buying all of these mics.

You only need one mic for Aron's excellent suggestion. Might be nice if it was omni, but doesn't really matter all that much for this specific case.

Once we used some kind of polka tune on a rock song, and in the middle, it was supposed to sound many people in a bar were singing along.

We did with 4 people, just 'jabbering' (making lots of noises like there were many people talking) and also yelled the song along, and mixed it with sound of glasses and stuff. With a little reverb and supported by the music it worked tremendously!! many ppl today still think we recorded it in a bar:)

Stupid question, but did the navy ask you to write the song or did you just wake up on morning and diceded to record a song for those men and women.

People who wake up with this sudden urge and want to record 50 people shouting huuuurrrraaaa frighten me.

I did myself however wake up one night and had the urge to write a song for all the chickens in the neighbours backyard. These animals are highly underrated. They should be recognised more. My girlfriend wouldn't let me write the song at 3 oclock in hte night though. Bummer
