Hi,

I'm thinking about getting a new synth for myself. I have no previous experience with synths, I've only used a Korg M1 a couple of times. Personally I didn't like the way it sounded!

I was thinking about spending $2000 on it. I want to use it in my homestudio for pruductions and what not. Mainly POP and ROCK music, no techno. Is there anything good out there that suits my needs?!

MAYBE, just MAYBE a combination of two or three synths. Any suggestions? But the budjet is limited to $2000.

Thanx in advance!!

think about the korg ms2000 and novation products...
Check out the Novation KS4 and KS5 .. goddamn AWESOME machines... you'll be creating great sounds and rythmic patterns in a flash on those..
it's got all the effects you need too, which you can also use for your vocals.
It's not only about getting a synth or a couple of synths. often, you are going to need alot of extra equipment to get the effects you want without having to track everything and use vst effects on your sampled sounds.

The KS4 & 5 got it all... great sounds, heaps of effects, FM synthesis, vocoder, the works.

it's got extra neat features like adjustable keyboard tracking on the filter and pitch

Since when do the Korg MS2000 and Novation KS4/5 make sense for pop/rock?

You can't get realistic sounds as far as real life instrument imitations go (B3, piano, EP...)

hmm.. brzil... alot of people use synths like that for pop.. but you're right, it would probably make better sense to buy a module or a rom keyboard.. but every time i hear the word "synth" i think of v/a and analogue ones...

I could suggest the e-mu proteus for a rom module....

No offense, but thats a pretty silly elitist comment. Sample playback synth (SPS) is just as much of a synth as anything else. They are just as complex, if not moreso. Any decent SPS has just as many multimode filters and modulation routings, if not more, than a VA.

The only difference between a SPS and others is the starting point (waveform).

I guess your OK outside the cave Chriss. VA's are just more fun.
But I would have to agree, that for rock there are probably better choices.

Check this out.
That is a BAD mutherfucker for $2200! I've got a k2500s, and I wouldn't sell it for $2200!

the kurzweils are AWESOME... so is the motif... and both will make you able to produce great tracks on the spot...

I walked into my local GC 6 months ago planning to buy a Nord Clavia.

I walked out instead with an Alesis QS-8.1 ($870) and a Novation K-Station ($695). The QS is a pretty good editable/expandable sample playback box, with EXCELLENT piano touch, the K-Station is a very cool analog-style synth w/ 25-key keyboard.

It seemed a great purchase until last month, when the 8.1 quit on me, and I found out the Alesis support network had dried up, and all repairs had to be preauthorized and shipped.

So be careful with Alesis stuff - hopefully Alesis/Numark will get the local repair thing worked out. My QS started working again, so my fingers are crossed.

Outside of that, it WAS money well spent.

Good luck.

people are warning others of the alesis' ... seemingly it's plastic junk that'll break if you look at it... why can't they put their damn products in solid packings instead of that fisher price shit????

Because then they wouldn't be as inexpensive as they are.:D
