I recently built a new computer for audio and video editing. Since I am focusing first on the video end, I need to get my audio in and out in real time. So, I play a simple wave file and expect it to play where it belongs on the video timeline and there is a full one second delay. Hell, I could get real time audio output using my crappy on board audio. What causes this? I am not recording in and expecting to hear it back at the same time. I just want to play a simple song and have it play immediately, like my crappy 486 computer did back in 1993.
When I change the audio hardware option to be my monitor's built in speakers, the delay disappears and the sound still comes from my studio monitors through the saffire pro40. I have no idea why.
