One of the newest songs I've written

It sounds really good and clean. My only complaint would be that it sounds like it's mono.......not much use of the stereo field. Good singing for the drummer.
Also, What do you think of the ART Tube?

So you're the one sharing the country charts with me over there! :)

I thought the song was great. Well written and performed and recorded. There IS something to be said for a condensor mic.
The guitar hook was good too.

I sure wish my drums sounded that good.

Maybe a tad to much 'verb on the wood block.

Have you heard any of my stuff over there? I have a post a few farther down that will take you to one of mine.

It IS mono...

nice writing. the singing sounds a tad midrangy, and some other eq issues. I'm gonna guess you've collapsed a stereo mix to mono [accidentally?] and got some bad artifacts in the result. The performing and writing are the winners in this piece.

powderfinger,
It is mono, I'll explain it father down this post. As far the ART tube pre, it really does a good job for the money. Thanks for your comments.

Sennheiser,
Thanks for your post and taking the time to listen. I have listened to several songs there but can't remember the names right now. But I will check out your songs as soon as I'm done with this post.

mixmkr,
It is mono for sure. I did this as an experiment. Because when I encoded in stereo the instruments seemed to fall to the back of the mix and the vocals and drums moved forward. I read an article that said when you encode in stereo or mono the file size would be the same either way. But the data definition would be finer. (For a lack of the appropriate terminology). I'm shooting in the dark mostly here. Thanks for you input.

I will go back an encode the original file in stereo and post it next to the mono track at NWR, so maybe you guys can here what I'm talking about

Thanks again guys,

Hey George,
I've an ART PRO myself and like it alot.

Your vocals are strong in the song. They carry well and I liked the pace of the song. I did think that the git fill aroung 2:12-2:20 could be pushed more to center.............other than that, my ears lack any helpfull mixing comments.

You've got the sound down.

Theron.

its nice!

sounds like you guys are going for a pretty standard kind of pop country thing.

good job on using the vs880ex. i have one of those and theyre a pain.

i use an akaidps16 now and its a lot easier.

the tube mp is a "warm" sounding unit. by that i mean that the one i have gives less high frequency content than all my other preamps. another term would be "dull" sounding.

im using my little mackie board's preamps for vocals now and theres a lot more detail and a lot clearer sound.

im hanging on the the tube mp tho cause im sure there will be times when i want a warmer sound and ive tried it on my keyboard and liked it a lot.

the drummer does have a nice singing voice doesnt he?

:)

Sounds pretty good to me. Crawdad would have some pretty good mixing advice for this I bet. Right up his alley methinks. I personally am having mixed results with the Tube MP. Lot of noise even with the gain down. Probably just need to experiment more.

There's something uncomfortable about the change at 3:30. Once it settles in it's smooth enough, but the transition feels just a tad weak to me. Take that with a grain of salt for I am clueless when it comes to country :D

Sounds like a great song though. I would personally cut the verb back a touch, but there are much stronger ears here than mine.

I guess I'm hearing the stereo version now..

The song is nicely done again.. don't have much to add other than I agree it's a bit mid-rangy. I'm sure it wouldnt bother the average listener though.. That guitar in the right that does the leads gets a bit crispy, or mid-rangy.. not sure.. Sounds pretty sweet for the most part.. I heard a bit of crackle every now and then.. could be my speakers though..

I agree crawdad would like this too..

nice song..

theron, jeap, SLuiCe, and B.SABBATH,

I didn’t want to keep bumping this thread myself, but I also didn't want to go without thanking you guys for taking the time to listen and comment. All of your comments are appreciated, pro or con.

theron,
I did not do the mixing myself. The lead singer of our group owns and operates the VS-880-EX. He doesn't do a bad job, but there is always room for improvement for anybody in anything.

jeap,
We can play a lot of different styles of music but progressive country seems to float higher in our neck of the woods. It's opened a few doors for us so far. We have been invited to play the at CCMA convention in Nashville in November, during there new artist showcase.

By the way, if you don't like that VS-880, I know a guy looking for one.

I've never tried that ART tube pre on my keyboard yet. I may give it try.

SLuiCe,
All ears are appreciated, thanks for listening. :)

B.SABBATH,
That is the stereo version. Thanks for listening again man. I agree it does sound "mid-rangy". But that's what bothers me. I'm encoding at 144. And when I go to listen at NWR where I posted it at, it sounds a lot different. The original file doesn't sound mid-rangy. Oh well. I'll keep plugging away.

ha ha ha

i rescued your thread from the netherworld of page 2.

i meant to listen a few days ago and then when i looked again it was gone so i went and got it.

it deserved a little more attention eh?

with one of my threads i answered each poster individually by quoting his entire post and then replying. it really kept the thread on page 1 a lot longer i think...

hmm...

the vs880ex is in like new condition and i think i have the original box with the styrofoam and everything. i have all the manuals and some extra manuals i downloaded from roland.

i was gonna keep it as a second or kickaround recorder but i havent used it at all for a long time now.

what would your friend be willing to pay for one?

:)

I really don't know but he's married with children, so from my own perspective, that qualifies him to be on a budget. :) I'll have him to contact you through this forum. I think on this board his user name is UncleSlam. Thanks for the info, and the bump. :D

Later,
