So per the last thread (which was REALLY helpful, thank you!!) I've decided to go with either the Great River or Chandler for my pre to record my 'heavy, pink floydish' guitar stuff. I was planning on running a KSM44 (for the room sound) and a Senheiser 421 (on the guitar cab) thru one of these pre's.

Now, my question is...
I want to also record an SM57 and a direct signal (radial DI box) along with the two other mics at the same time. How should I go about this?

My problem (yes besides not knowing enough about mic pres)...
I can't afford two GR's or two Chandlers.

My options (as far as I know)
1.)Use my existing Aphex 207 for the SM57/ DI Box
2.)Use the pre's in my digi002
3.)Quit now and save some $$$, cause I'll never finish this album
4.)Getting a better 2 channel pre (I can't spend more than $500 as the GR or Chandler upgrade is gonna kill my wallet tenfold!)
5.)Getting a good one channel pre and using my digi002 pre for the direct
6.)Homerecording member's posts/insight

I'm using a voxac30 and a mesa recta half stack with an explorer, an esp, and a strat. My goal is to have a pro-sounding/ as close to commercially competitive album done, with the guitars tracked on my own.

Thanks

Well, If you need two more inputs and have $500.... I would say use the Aphex, and get another mic or two. I would have a look at some ribbon mics for guitar. After choosing a ribbon mic, maybe just save the rest of your money and experiment with what you have for a while:)

That Line 6 UX2 of mine is getting alot of use...and it was only $200...It can give you the sounds of the Neve,API,and Avalon plus a few others with 2 channels...Im suprised it isnt getting more talk arround here. :)

the digi 002 pre's are awesome.. how bout a Presonus BlueTube for like 200 bucks? there not too bad at all. also, the ART DPS is pretty good, and for $229, you get the two channels with a S/PDIF output into your digi 002.

Well, you may be out of luck because the GR 2NV, the two channel version is around $2150 although, even though it has no DI, you might consider the Neve Portico 5012. It has two channels at around $1700 and is very similar to the GR, I like it better on vocals and guitars than the GR. Just a spectacular preamp

Another alternative (although possibly a slight value risk, only time will tell) is the Chameleon 7602. It has the same characteristics as the GR and the Portico only very slightly grainier and is modeled after a Neve 1073 some say the Chandler. They can be had for around $799 a piece and two of these come in around $1600. They have built in EQ which is a plus, shelving and a DI.

In fact these are next on my list as they have a little grit, color and the cost is very reasonable for what you get.

Thanks for the info everyone!!!
I got some more window shopping to do!
