One handed Bassist

Hey! I'm bumping this thread till everybody checks this cat out! Dammit!

LB I ran into a one handed bassist in atlanta back in the late 70`s, but he had a cup on the end of his arm at the wrist, with a pick holder on it. He was a bad to the bone picker, but this dude here has got his skills in tune bigtime..I wonder what/ if there are any issues with some of the other genres. Although I`m sure he stays busy with what he strokes on well.

I knew a bassist back in the 60's who was probably a Phthaladimide baby. His arms were half as long as they should be, and his hands were claws. He had no thumbs.

He played a short scale bass, and he hooked his pinky finger of his left hand behind the neck in lieu of a thumb. He had almost no dexterity in his right hand, so he had to move his whole hand to play each note.

He was no Jaco Pastorius, but he got the job done. He played with an acid rock band called the Luvrakers, and their signature cover was Inagaddadavida, the album version.

i bet he could get some sweet sounds by sliding that prosthetic arm up and down his strings. he really should incorporate it.

A guy I played R & B with in the 80's (maybe that's why we didn't get paid a lot? ... disco & R & B don't mix ;) had the end of his third finger (left hand) missing ... used to put a thimble on it ... wicked harmonics ;-)

BTW: in defense of the 'shitty drummer' ... I think a lot of people might be intimidated by the one-armed guy ... give him credit for being a friend & jamming with the dude :)

You know, we GOTTA find out who this guy is ... spread the word! Name of the file is 'bill320' ... must be Bill Somebody.

Ibanez came out with a Precision copy in the 70's that had lines drawn under the laquer on a maple neck.
Iv'e just sent that off to our bass player.

I just watched it again.
I dont think the bass has any strings it.
Something looks off with has bass.
Could he have some sort of pads on the fret board? (still awesome)

Way to patronize the guy.

Yeah, I believe the bass is fretless, for a couple reasons; I listened to the track a couple times, cranked up, all the way through---Not one fret slap. I don't care who you are, nobody can hammeron like that for that amount of time without some kind of fret noise somewhere...The other reason is that if you listen intently, once in a while his intonation is off by fractions of a quaver, but not consistantly. the attack of his notes are way smooth for hammerons on a fretted instrument. I noticed no bent notes or any vibrato either, he played straight...DAMNED impressive.

I've seen quite a few fretless basses with lines on the neck--Some companies offered them to help those new to fretless to develop intonation. Carvin used to offer them, maybe still, maybe no...I had a friend in Tulsa with a bee-YOO-tiful old Gibson EB-0 that he took and filed the frets flush with the fretboard, then urethaned over. --Lines intact...I noticed that when light reflected off Bill's neck, I couldn't see any frets breaking up the reflection...

I could listen to the guy play all day, but that drummer had my ears exhausted about halfway through...

Eric
