I believe that's what it's called when a mixer has effects already programmed in. Is this a good feature? Does it save noise or trouble? Or is it generally disapointing?

Kevin, everytime I see that cat in your sig, for some reason it reminds me of Scarface.
Oh... and yes, FX built in to mixers are pretty lame, mostly because they're just cheap and built into cheap mixers. So a lot of corners are cut. About the only "on board" FX of any device I like is the KDFX in Kurzweil K2600 synth/workstations because they're fantastic and infinitely tweakable. Would easily compete with other multiFX standalone devices that cost around 1500-2000$, and the ones in the Motif ES because they're good quality... but in a $500 mixer, don't expect miracles.
What about the mixers from Allen & Heath? Can I assume the same for those? Those are around the thousand dollar range, but I still can't guess whether they would be useable or not.
Are you recording to your computer? If so, buy a model w/o the built in effects and I promise you that the free/cheap/reasonable software effects you can get with the money left over will sound much better and be much more flexible.
