Need some mics (mostly vocals and live stuff). How important is the on/off switch? We usually set up ahead of time (vocals and guitar), then turn the mics off 'til it's time to play.

I was thinking of getting the shure sm58, the sm58s has the on/off switch.

What about buying off ebay?

Switches break. Don't get them (the mics with switches, I mean).

The SM58 does NOT have a switch. Most mics that do are crap.

Turn your PA off instead. If you need to leave it on, get cables with switches.

Mute button on your channel faders.........don't even the cheapest Pas have channel mutes?

The switches on the 58 are a pain. The singer can accidently turn the mic off while they are prancing around the stage. Performing musicians don't need extra little details to think about and watch out for while they are playing. Don't bother with the switch.

Thanks everyone!

I'm a newbie......not only on these boards, but playing "live".

What about ebay for the SM58.

Someone suggested this to me. Saying that since they are so durable, if I buy from a reputable seller, I shouldn't have a problem, and can save some $$

Just watch out. There have been fake shure mikes on ebay for a while.

:D :D :D

Hey - no sweat. My point was that the SM58 is actually available with a switch. Whether having a switch on a mic is a good thing is up to the user. The only mic I own that has a switch on it is an old SM-545 from the early 70's... the switch has never been a problem (other than forgetting to turn it on!). My other 37 mics have no switches.

Good call. Buy from a known source.

That's what the lock is for. Of course, that sort of defeats the purpose of having a switch.... :D

Any condenser that can be powered by a battery will have a switch. While some of those are crap, I wouldn't say "most". Now if you had said that most dynamic mics with switches are crap, I'd agree... but then again, most dynamic mics are crap, at least when measured by number sold....

You're right, of course. I should have added the qualifier "dynamic" but my post was a bit hasty.

Add a switch if ya want

They make a switch that plugs into the base of the microphone and has a male xlr out so that you can add a switch to a mic that doesn't have it. Or if it's a problem just take it off. Probably the best bet...

does your board have a 'mute' switch? or just turn down the master faders..

switchs+mics=crap.

i love setting up live gigs :) i love it better when you catch a nice sound on the kick drum, and the asshole singer walks past and almost trips on the stand and screws everything up.

I wish guitar players and singers had on/off switches...
